It’s certainly not the most appetizing snack, but there are several reasons why cats may show interest in consuming the best cat litter – and many of them may need to be addressed promptly.

In some cases, litter eating can be a harmless exploratory behavior, especially in kittens. But for adult cats, it’s more likely to point to a nutritional deficiency, stress, or even an underlying medical condition like anemia or gastrointestinal disease. Why is my cat eating litter?

If your cat is eating litter, there are several possible explanations. Some are relatively harmless, while others can be a red flag for something more serious. Here’s what might be going on:

1. Curiosity or exploratory behavior: Kittens, in particular, use their mouths to explore the world, much like human babies. It’s not uncommon for them to nibble at their litter as part of this phase. Usually, they grow out of it once they understand it’s not food.

2. Anemia: One of the more serious causes of litter eating is anemia. When a cat has low levels of red blood cells, they can display unusual behaviors, including eating non-food items – a condition known as pica. If your cat is lethargic, has pale gums, and is showing a sudden interest in eating litter, get them checked out promptly.

3. Nutritional deficiencies: Cats who are missing essential nutrients in their diet, especially minerals like iron, may turn to litter in an attempt to compensate. This is more likely if your cat is on a poorly balanced homemade diet or a low-quality commercial food.

4. Stress or anxiety: Behavioral issues can also be a cause. Stress and anxiety from a recent move, new pets in the home, or changes to their routine may cause some cats to develop compulsive behaviors, including eating litter. Environmental enrichment and routine are key here.

5. Underlying medical conditions: Sometimes, cats with gastrointestinal disorders, chronic kidney disease, or even diabetes may start exhibiting unusual eating habits. It’s important to rule out any medical causes, especially if this is new behavior in an adult cat.

6. Inappropriate litter type: Some types of cat litter are made from materials that actually smell or taste vaguely edible, such as corn, wheat, or walnut-based litters. While these are often marketed as eco-friendly, some cats may mistake them for food.

What happens if my cat eats litter?

Whether your cat eats litter once or repeatedly, there may be health consequences, and some are serious. Clumping clay litter is particularly risky, as it can expand and cause blockages in the intestines, leading to vomiting, constipation, or even life-threatening obstruction. Silica-based litters can cause irritation or dehydration, while natural litters may ferment in the gut.

Even small amounts ingested over time can build up and cause chronic GI issues. If you see your cat eating litter regularly or showing signs like vomiting, lethargy, not eating, or changes in bowel movements, it’s time to visit your vet. A simple blood test can rule out anemia, and your vet may recommend diet changes or imaging to check for blockages.

How do you stop your cat from eating cat litter?

Here are some practical steps you can take to help stop your cat from eating their litter:

1. Rule out medical issues first: Always start with a vet check to exclude anemia, nutritional deficiencies, or underlying illnesses.
2. Switch to a safer litter: Consider changing to a non-clumping, unscented, or paper-based litter that won’t cause harm if ingested.
3. Improve your cat’s diet: Make sure your cat is eating a complete and balanced diet suitable for their life stage. Your vet can help with this, and there is a lot of information available on the best cat foods to choose.
4. Provide enrichment: Offer plenty of toys, puzzles, and playtime to reduce boredom and redirect oral behaviors.

Ever found yourself asking 'can I use cat litter for dogs?' If you have a feline friend in your life, you likely swear by having a litter box in your home – after all, they're a real lifesaver when it comes to preventing accidents. But can you kill two birds with one stone and have your dog use your cat's litter as well?

The good news is, you can absolutely do this. Although the best cat litter is marketed at cat owners, there are plenty of brands that have products that are safe for dogs to use to.

We consulted expert vet Dr Rebecca MacMillan to find out whether there are any particular types of cat litter that are better for dogs and if any need to be avoided – she shared her thoughts below.

Can I use cat litter for dogs?

The simple answer is yes, your dog can absolutely use cat litter. While cat litter is generally used for our feline friends, if incontinence in dogs is affecting your pup you may find it helpful to have a litter tray in your home for them to use when they feel the urge to go. It could also prove convenient, especially during the night as your dog will be able to toilet when they need to rather than you having to wake up to take them outside.

"You can use cat litter for dogs," Dr MacMillan confirms, "but you may need to take care if your dog has a habit of eating things they shouldn’t. Clumping cat litter could cause serious problems like bowel obstruction, especially if your dog ingests large amounts relative to their size. Dog-specific litter is available, and it usually comes in the form of wood or paper pellets, but there are cat versions that are very similar."

While non-clumping wood or paper litter are good choices for dogs, Dr MacMillan goes on to add they may not take as kindly to using litter as cats do.

"It’s important to note that cats seem instinctively keen to use a sandy substrate which allows them to dig and bury their droppings," she explains. "However, dogs tend to prefer a firmer surface or grass to eliminate on. So, this means some dogs will get on better with puppy pads (like this eco-friendly one from Amazon) or fake grass, rather than litter."

Is there a difference between dog litter and cat litter?

There are lots of different types of cat litter and you may find that these vary from the types of dog litter that are on sale.

"Cat litter comes in all sorts of varieties including clay, wood pellets, and paper-based litters," says Dr MacMillan. "Less types of dog-specific litter seem to exist, and the ones that do are usually paper based. Dogs don’t need to dig and scratch around when going to the bathroom like cats, so they don’t need a fine substrate."

If you're wanting to stop your dog peeing in the house, Dr MacMillan says that using litter may be unnecessary.

"Dogs can be trained to just use a dog litter box with a plastic grate on it, a puppy pad, or fake grass."

Because of this, you'll find there isn't the same market or demand for dog litter.

Signs your dog needs a litter box

You may be wondering if there are any particular signs you should be on the lookout for that indicate your pup would benefit from a litter box. Well, according to Dr MacMillan there aren't too many situations that warrant this.

"Taking your dog outside to toilet whenever possible is always recommended, so there are not that many situations when a dog litter box is indicated," she says. However, there are a few exceptions.

"Dogs with mobility issues that struggle to get outside might be an example of a litter box candidate, as well as those that are recovering from illness or injury," Dr MacMillan states. "Dogs that live in high-rise apartment blocks and can’t easily get outside, or those that live in locations prone to extreme weather might also be suitable."

So, what about those days when you're out of the house for several hours at a time and your dog is on their own? Dr MacMillan says in these sorts of situations, you should consider using a pet sitter or dog walker, rather than a litter box.

"This will meet your dog’s social and exercise needs, as well as their toileting needs," she explains. "Litter boxes should not be a reason to leave your dog alone for hours on end."

However, if you do decide to invest in a doggy litter box, Dr MacMillan says it's worth noting that these are really only practical for small breeds of dogs.

"Large dogs will void large amounts of urine, and they are more likely to miss the tray altogether, especially males who like to cock their leg."

I don't know about you, but my cats constantly pester me for attention when I work from home – jumping on my desk, knocking things over, and, most annoyingly, blocking the entire view of my monitor with their rear ends.

How to play with a cat without cat toys

When it comes to the best cat toys, we really are spoilt for choice these days with more and more great options lining the shelves. But sometimes, the sheer variety of toys available can feel overwhelming, not to mention that the cost of constantly buying new toys can quickly add up.

Thankfully, when it comes to how to play with a cat the right way, there's nothing in the cat owner handbook that says you have to use toys. There are plenty of other amazing ways that you can give your cat's brain and body a good workout each day.

Here are a few ideas to get you started...

1. Fetch
Can cats play fetch? You bet they can! While not all kitty's will enjoy this game, some breeds are particularly known for their love of fetch, including the Devon Rex, Cornish Rex, Manx, Siamese, and Japanese Bobtail just to name a few.

"Crumpled-up paper balls make great low-hassle toys," says Dr MacMillan. "Try throwing these for your cat and rewarding them if they bring it back."

2. Hide-and-seek
When it comes to our favorite fun games to play with cats, hide-and-seek is definitely at the top of the list.

"Try calling your cat or rattling the treat tin – then run and hide!" Dr MacMillan advises. "Hide somewhere your cat can easily access, such as behind the curtains, behind an open door, or under the bed. Give your cat a reward when he finds you."

3. Create a cardboard box playground
Looking for ways to use up all those delivery boxes that end up accumulating in your house until trash collection day? Dr MacMillan suggests saving them up and placing them around a room randomly.

"Cats love boxes!," she says. "Your cat can play hide-and-seek, climb on them, pretend to be a jack in the box or just curl up for a snooze. If they need a little encouragement, make sure the boxes are completely open and place a few treats inside."

4. Make a DIY puzzle feeder
Yes, you can absolutely buy a cat puzzle feeder, but making one is easier than you might think.

"This could include stacking rolls of toilet tubes on their sides in a pyramid formation. Placing treats randomly in different holes.," Dr MacMillan says.

"Your cat will have to use a paw to get them out! Or you could try cutting an egg carton up to make individual cups you can place over the top of a treat that needs knocking over."

5. Teach them a trick
When it comes to how to teach a cat a trick, many of us shy away from this because we feel like it's going to be overly complicated. But believe it or not, it's actually quite simple. And the best part is, you can do it without a single toy in sight.

"It’s possible to train your cat to do tricks during play sessions such as high five, sit and stay," explains Dr MacMillan. "Keep training sessions short, use a clear command word and use positive reinforcement such as treats and praise to reward them."

6. Use a cat-friendly app on your phone
Want a game that will keep your kitty occupied and let you relax at the same time?

"You could try downloading a cat-friendly app where your cat must use their paws to tap at moving objects," Dr MacMillan suggests. "Don’t forget that cats view screens differently from us though, so don’t feel annoyed if your cat doesn’t want to engage."

7. Blow bubbles for your cat to chase
“Try blowing bubbles for your cat," Dr MacMillan suggests. "The random movements of the bubbles will encourage your cat to get moving and chasing. You can even buy flavored bubbles for pets which might stimulate them further."

This one is super fun if you have kids in the house – and equally as fun if you don't. Trust us, your inner child will love it!

How long to play with a cat

Regular play sessions are vital for your cat's mental and physical wellbeing, but how long and how frequent should these sessions be? Here's what Dr MacMillan has to say:

"Cats need 20–30 minutes of activity each day, depending on their age and health status. However, for most cats, this is broken up into several short play sessions rather than one big long one.

“Play is important for cats as it keeps them both physically and mentally fit. Play helps your cat to bond with you, as well as allowing them to express natural behaviors. In my experience, increasing playtime is one of the best things you can do to help cats suffering from boredom, boisterousness, or destructive tendencies."

While playing with your feline friend is important for strengthening your bond, there will always be times when you're too busy to engage. In those instances, we recommend having some of the best automated cat toys on hand that your cat can play with independently.

How do I get my cat interested in toys?

Some cats are more playful than others, but all cats can benefit from play – it can just take a bit of experimenting to find the sort of toys, games and pace that your cat responds best to.

"Try a variety of different toys with your cat," Dr MacMillan suggests. "While some might go mad for a fishing rod style, others prefer crinkle balls or a kickeroo. When purchasing your toys think about the ones that most resemble prey, with random movements or sounds to encourage interaction.

"Have a toy rotation system too, so that you keep things fresh and interesting for your cat. You can help encourage them to play by rewarding their efforts with a small treat or lots of verbal praise. Catnip can work wonders for some cats too. This natural stimulant can persuade some cats to chew or roll around on their toys."

And while it may make sense to kill two birds with one stone and let both of your pets play with the same toys, cat toys do pose some risks to dogs.

The best cat toys for indoor cats are, according to expert vet Dr Rebecca MacMillan, usually much smaller in size than dog toys and there's a chance that your pup could swallow one of these items and end up choking. Cat toys also aren't as robust and are designed to tap into a cat's natural hunting instincts.

Still, while purchasing cat toys for your dog isn't advisable, what about if you already have them in the house? Is it okay for your pup to play with them from time to time? And what happens if they accidentally eat one? We asked Dr MacMillan for her advice. Here's what she had to say...

Can dogs play with cat toys?

If you live in a multi-pet household with both dogs and cats, all the different items they need can quickly add up. So it's no surprise that you may have come up with a clever way to cut costs and have your fur friends share their toys. But is letting your dog play with your cat's toys a good idea? Dr MacMillan says most vets don't recommend it.

"While it might be good mental stimulation to play with new items now and then, cat toys could be problematic," she explains. "Generally, the bigger the dog, the more likely it is to accidentally swallow the toy or destroy it through chewing. Cat toys are often small in size leading to choking in dogs or have other bits on them like feathers or string, which they can easily chew off.

The good news is that there are some toys that are designed to be used by both cats and dogs and Dr MacMillan says it's best to purchase these or to try and encourage them to play with their own items.

What is the difference between a cat toy and a dog toy?

Walk into any pet store and you'll no doubt come face to face with rows and rows of different dog and cat toys – but surely they're pretty much the same, right? Well, according to Dr MacMillan, not exactly.

"The best cat toys are designed to stimulate natural feline hunting behaviors such as stalking, pouncing, and grabbing," she explains. "These movements often require fine motor control and precision. Cat toys are often small, and some have random prey-like actions.

"Dog toys on the other hand are designed for rough-and-tumble games like tug, fetch, and chewing. Dog toys tend to be larger, heavier, and more suited to your pet’s size. These toys are also more robust as they are designed to withstand the strength of a dog’s jaw and the intense way that they play."

So while they may often look similar, it's always advisable to buy your pup the best dog toys that have been designed to meet their specific needs rather than giving them your cat's toys to play with.

What happens if my dog eats a cat toy?

"If your dog eats a cat toy then there is a risk of it causing a blockage in their stomach or guts, depending on the size and shape of the toy. In some cases, a swallowed toy could cause choking," Dr MacMillan explains.

If you think your dog has eaten a cat toy, then you must call your vet for advice. Your vet might suggest an injection to induce vomiting, but some pets can require endoscopy (a camera to retrieve the item from your dog’s stomach) or surgery.

“Left untreated, a foreign body could make your dog seriously unwell, causing vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, abdominal pain, and damage to the digestive tract. It is always best to get your dog checked out rather than waiting for symptoms to develop."

Is it safe to give dogs catnip toys?

A substance that drives many cats crazy, catnip is found in many feline-friendly toys but is catnip safe for dogs or does it pose risks that you need to be aware of? Well, according to Dr MacMillan, both fresh and dried catnip are not toxic to dogs and shouldn’t have any adverse effects.

"Catnip doesn’t tend to have the same effects on dogs as it does on cats, but you may notice some mild sedation," she explains. "If your dog consumes a very large amount of catnip, then the plant material may lead to a few tummy troubles.

"Problems are actually much more likely to occur if your dog ingests the toy containing the catnip, however. If swallowed, a catnip toy could become lodged in your dog’s stomach or intestines, acting as a dangerous foreign body."

How to entertain a cat that doesn’t like toys

Not every cat enjoys batting around plastic balls or chasing feather wands. If toys aren’t your cat’s thing, try one (or several!) of these alternative enrichment ideas:

1. Create a window perch for bird watching
Cats are natural hunters, and even if they’re not the type to chase a toy around the house, they’ll often enjoy watching the world go by. Set up a comfy window perch or cat hammock by a secure window where they can watch birds, squirrels, or even just the neighbors coming and going. 2. Offer cardboard boxes and paper bags
Sometimes the simplest things are the most fun. Cardboard boxes and paper grocery bags (with the handles removed for safety) can provide hours of entertainment. They’re perfect for hiding, pouncing, and exploring, plus, they appeal to your cat’s natural instincts without needing fancy toys.

3. Use scent-based enrichment

Yes, some cats just don’t like toys, and that’s completely normal. While play is an important behavior, not all cats express it in the same way. Some cats prefer watching rather than doing, especially as they get older or if they’ve never been encouraged to play as kittens.

Breed and personality also play a role. For instance, highly active breeds like Bengals and Abyssinians are usually toy-driven, whereas quieter cats like Persians might prefer to snooze and observe rather than chase. As long as your cat is otherwise healthy, content, and getting enrichment in other ways, there’s no need to worry.

Just be aware, if a cat suddenly stops playing or becomes withdrawn, it’s worth checking in with your vet, as this could be a sign of pain, illness, or stress.

How do I tell if my cat is under stimulated?

Cats who aren’t getting enough stimulation can develop behavioural or emotional issues. Here are a few signs your cat might be understimulated:

• Excessive sleeping or lethargy: It’s normal for cats to sleep a lot, but if your cat is only sleeping and never showing bursts of energy or curiosity, they could be bored.
• Destructive behavior: Scratching furniture, chewing wires, or knocking things over may be signs your cat is trying to create their own fun in the absence of stimulation.
• Overgrooming or other stress behaviors: Cats who feel unfulfilled may resort to overgrooming, pacing, or even aggression. These behaviors can be both a symptom of boredom and stress.
• Meowing excessively or demanding attention: A cat that constantly meows or seems clingy may be trying to tell you they need more engagement, just not in the form of a squeaky mouse toy!

If you suspect your cat is understimulated, try gradually introducing some of the enrichment techniques mentioned above, and monitor how they respond.

Not all cats are captivated by traditional toys – and that’s perfectly okay. Every feline has their own unique preferences and personality. When you’re watching your cat play with some catnip you sprinkled on the floor, it’s pretty common to wonder, "does catnip get cats high?”. After all, the way cats roll around and act silly looks just like it – but is that how catnip works?

When I was a veterinary student, I fostered cats for a local charity. It was a great way to gain experience with my feline patients and I learned loads about their quirks. I especially loved trying them with catnip – although, disappointingly, half of my charges didn’t react to it, even with the best catnip toys.

After graduating as a vet, I even worked in feline-only practice for a time – I truly appreciate cats and their quirks, both medical and behavioral. So, you can imagine I was all too excited to write this article about catnip!

Does catnip get cats high?

The million-dollar question – is catnip a drug for cats? Does it get them high? Well, let’s first define a ‘high’. For the purposes of this article, we’ll say it’s a feeling of extreme wellbeing and happiness – a ‘euphoric’ reaction.

In this case, I think we can safely say catnip gets cats high. After all, their reaction is definitely euphoric, with initial excitement and hyperactivity followed by a relaxed and happy state.

Some people associate a ‘high’ from drugs with hallucinations, but there’s no evidence that cats have this reaction. And, unlike drug highs in humans, a catnip high for cats doesn’t seem to have negative impacts.

In fact, when cats smell catnip it releases a lot of endorphins – it’s quite similar to the ‘natural high’ humans get from exercise. It’s thought that cats have evolved this reaction because the endorphin release causes behaviors like rolling, which increases the contact of the cat with the catnip, improving their protection against mosquitoes and other insects.

The endorphins released when cats sniff catnip work on the opioid receptors. ‘Opioids?’ I hear you say – yes, these are the same receptors that opioids like morphine and heroin act on, which definitely adds weight to the idea that catnip gives cats a high!

What is a catnip ‘high’ like for cats?

When cats smell catnip, their body reacts to a natural compound in the plant called nepetalactone by releasing lots of endorphins. These endorphins act on opioid receptors in the body, causing feelings of pleasure and relaxation.

Not all cats respond to catnip (studies show that about one in three don’t!) but for those that do, the response is very fast. Cats initially sniff and chew the leaves, then become excited within seconds, rolling in the scent and sometimes running about from room to room.

The effect wears off after about 10 minutes. The cat won’t then respond to catnip for a couple of hours, but during this time they may be sleepier than usual.

Can cats overdose on catnip?

The good news for our catnip-crazy felines is that it isn’t possible for cats to overdose on the smell of catnip. Once the initial excitement has worn off, the cat becomes uninterested in the catnip for a couple of hours.

Even if they were to then sniff the catnip and have another high, there is no harm in this – it’s all natural and caused by their endorphins.

That said, catnip can be bad for cats if they eat too much of it, so if your cat tries to eat catnip as part of their reaction you may have to prevent them from eating it. It’s not toxic as such, but it can cause an upset stomach if they eat a lot.

Can cats get addicted to catnip?

One of the major concerns with human opioids and human highs is over-reliance and addiction. Since the last thing we want is a crazy catnip-addicted moggy, it’s worth exploring whether cats can get addicted to catnip.

Luckily, there’s no evidence that this is the case. Even cats who are used to regular catnip highs don’t seem to have withdrawal symptoms when it’s removed, and because it uses natural endorphins, it’s less likely that any sort of addiction could be created.

That said, some humans get addicted to the natural endorphins from exercise, so it’s possible that some cats would miss the catnip reaction and come to crave it, it’s just that we don’t recognize these behaviors as addiction.

How does catnip compare to a human high?

When humans seek a ‘high’, they’re wanting to experience intense feelings of pleasure and relaxation, sometimes alongside ‘out of body’ experiences and hallucinations.

They seek the drugs most likely to give them this feeling. Since the feeling is very pleasurable, it becomes something people want more of and, for some drugs, their body becomes used to the drug, meaning they need to take more and more often to get the same effect.

Catnip isn’t like that. Firstly, as far as we know, cats don’t crave catnip or don’t go looking for catnip as a way to get high. They probably aren’t thinking “I fancy a high, where’s my catnip?” – it’s a more natural, instinctive reaction than that. The smell of catnip sets off a chain reaction – not dissimilar to the way the smell of your favorite food might cause you to salivate.

Secondly, cats don’t usually become immune to catnip or seek it out in greater and greater amounts. If a cat reacts to catnip, they usually react to it for the rest of their lives (bar the couple of hours after the excitement phase, where they seem to have no interest in it).

Catnip does become less potent over time though, so if your cat seems to be becoming immune to their catnip, try buying some new catnip.

Lastly, there’s no evidence that cats have hallucinations or out-of-body experiences while on catnip. Although some pet parents report that cats run from room to room and assume this is hallucinations, it might just be a way of cats burning off extra energy and excitement.

In my opinion, the answer to “does catnip get cats high?” is yes, but it depends on how you define a high. Since my definition is “feelings of intense pleasure and relaxation”, and this seems to be what cats feel when they sniff catnip, I think cats do get a ‘high’ from catnip.

That said, it’s important to remember that this is a ‘natural high’ stimulated by the cat’s own endorphins. The good news is that there doesn’t appear to be anything harmful or addictive about catnip, so you can safely let your cat play with their favorite catnip (or silvervine!) toys.

Valerian contains an active compound called actinidine. This compound stimulates cats and triggers a euphoric response similar to catnip. After sniffing valerian, cats will often start rolling around, rubbing themselves on things, purring loudly, and becoming very playful!

Cats can experience valerian in various forms, including:

How do cats react to valerian?

3. It has a very strong odor
Valerian has a pungent, earthy smell that some people may find unpleasant. If used in toys or sprays, the scent may linger in your home.

4. It may cause digestive upset
If a cat ingests large amounts of valerian root, it may cause mild gastrointestinal upset, such as vomiting or diarrhea.

5. It is not suitable for all cats
Valerian may not be ideal for cats with certain medical conditions, such as heart disease or kidney issues. Always check with a vet before introducing valerian to a cat with health issues.

6. It can be unpredictable
Unlike catnip, which typically stimulates cats for a few minutes before they become calm, valerian can have a more prolonged or unpredictable effect.

Is valerian safe for cats?

Yes, valerian is generally safe for cats when used in moderation. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Always use it in small amounts: Too much valerian can cause your cat mild digestive upset.

2. Always supervise your cat: As mentioned above, some cats can become overly excited or slightly aggressive when exposed to valerian.

3. Avoid valerian supplements for humans: These may contain additional ingredients that aren’t safe for cats.

The safest way to introduce valerian is through cat-specific products, such as valerian-filled toys or powders designed specifically for feline use. If your cat has any pre-existing health conditions, consult your vet before using valerian for the first time.

Does valerian affect all cats?

No, not all cats react to valerian. Just like catnip, the response to valerian is controlled by genetics. The BMC Vet Research Journal suggests that around 50-70% of cats have a sensitivity to catnip, and a similar percentage may respond to valerian.

Kittens under six months old and senior cats are less likely to react, as the sensitivity to valerian (and other cat attractants) is linked to a cat’s genetic makeup and age.

If your cat doesn’t respond to valerian, you might want to try other alternatives like silver vine or Tatarian honeysuckle, both of which have been shown to stimulate cats that don’t react to catnip.

Is valerian stronger than catnip?

Valerian and catnip both have stimulating effects on cats, but valerian is often considered stronger and longer-lasting than catnip. It can be difficult to gauge as the reaction varies between individual cats. Some may respond more intensely to valerian, while others prefer catnip.

Here are the key differences:

• Active compounds: Catnip’s nepetalactone triggers a brief euphoric reaction by stimulating sensory neurons. Valerian contains actinidine and valerenic acid, which can either energize or relax cats.
• Effects on cats: Catnip typically causes playful rolling and rubbing for five to 15 minutes before fading. Valerian’s effects last longer and vary – some cats become hyperactive, while others relax.

As someone who tests pet products for a living, I know these devices can get super expensive (we're talking up to $1,000!). So, when I saw that the PetPivot Autoscooper 11 is 29% off in the Amazon Spring Deals sale, I couldn't be more excited about it.

It's very hard to find an automatic box for under $200, but right now, you can grab this one for just $169 – by far the best deal I've seen in a long time.

I've been testing this gadget out for the past couple of weeks, and let me tell you, it's already been a total life-changer. The box features a self-cleaning function that can be set to automatic or manual, so if you think your kitty might be hesitant to use it, you can just press the manual clean button when they're not in the room.

During the cycle, your cat's poop falls into the waste container below, which can hold up to 10L of litter and only needs changing every 10 days. You'll get a roll of bin liners included, which are easy to tie up and throw out when it's time to refresh.

My favorite part? The way it contains bad smells. If you're a cat parent, you’ll know there’s nothing worse than the smell of their poo, and since I keep my cats' litter boxes in my bathroom, it was becoming a bit of a nightmare.

I'm not sure if it's the Autoscooper or the new cat litter – probably a combination of the two – but the smells have gone from 100 to zero – and I couldn't be happier about it!

Speaking of cat litter, you'll be able to use most clumping litters, including bentonite, mineral, mixed, and cassava, but I highly recommend the Croci Eco Clean Litter, which is compostable and flushable.

One of my cats can be very nervous around new things, so I was skeptical that they'd even want to use it. However, to my delight, both of them have started using the Autoscooper more than their traditional boxes.

I will say that there has been quite a lot of litter tracking with this box (I suspect it's when they jump down), but thankfully, it comes with a special mat to help prevent this – I just hadn't got around to putting it down yet.

It might not have any flashy features, like the more expensive boxes do, but for under $200, I think it's a total steal. It also makes the setup much easier – I had this up and running in under 10 minutes!

However, if those things are important to you, I'd recommend the Neakasa M1, which features a similar open-top design but with more advanced features, like app control. Or, opt for the Whisker Litter-Robot 4 which has a hooded design, waste level alerts, and health monitoring.

Hair ties look so uninteresting to us humans, so we were curious to find out what it is about them that makes them so enticing to cats. To help us out, we turned to expert vet Dr. Rebecca MacMillan who was more than happy to share her thoughts with us.

Below, she reveals why cats like hair ties. Plus, she explains why these small, seemingly innocuous items can be so dangerous to cats and how you can stop your kitty from playing with them.

Why do cats like hair ties?

When it comes to funny things cats do, playing with hair ties is definitely on the list. If you're anything like us, you may be wondering what it is about those colorful elastic bands you put in your hair that your feline friend finds so appealing, so we spoke to Dr. MacMillan to find out! Here's what she had to say...

1. Curiosity

One of the ways cats learn about the world around them is to investigate different objects as they come across them. In order to decide whether something is safe or unsafe, they'll use their paws to pick it up, pat at it or swat it.

"Cats are curious by nature and discover the world through play," explains Dr. MacMillan. "Kicking a hair tie around helps them to learn more about this object."

2. Texture

Have you invested in several of the best interactive cat toys only to find that your feline friend prefers playing with a hair tie? Blame it on the texture!

"Cats seem to like chewing on the elastic material of a hair tie," says Dr. MacMillan. Some hair ties are soft while some are crinkly, these textures are all exciting for a cat to explore!"

3. Movement

While we may have welcomed them into our homes and our hearts, domestic cats still have strong hunting instincts leftover from the days when they needed to stalk and kill prey in order to survive.

Even though you likely feed your kitty plenty of the best cat food each day, those survival instincts remain strong, which is why you'll so often see them engaging in predatory behavior with toys.

"The small, quick movements of a hair tie being batted around tap into your cat’s natural hunting instincts," Dr. MacMillan confirms. "The hair tie mimics the motions they would expect to see in their prey."

4. They're comforting

One of the little known facts about cats is that they have more than 200 million odor senses in their noses – compare that to us humans who have just five million. This means that their sense of smell is 14 times better than ours, so while we may not be able to smell our scent on a hair tie, our feline friend certainly can.

"For some cats, it may be because the hair tie smells of their owner, or perhaps they like the elastic smell," says Dr. MacMillan. "We can’t know for sure, but what we do know is that cats have a very keen nose and there is something about hair ties that particularly appeals to them."

5. Because they're fun

While things like texture, movement and familiar smell could explain why cats like hair ties so much, as Dr. MacMillan says, it could also be down to the fact that pawing at them and tossing them about is an enjoyable way to pass the time.

"Many cats just find them good fun to play with! They can be chewed, stretched, and easily thrown about. Playing is your cat’s way of keeping boredom at bay."

Is it OK for my cat to play with hair ties?

While our feline friends may adore playing with hair ties, Dr. MacMillan says it's important as pet parents that we don't encourage them.

"Hair ties can be extremely dangerous if swallowed, potentially obstructing your cat’s digestive tract. This could lead to your pet requiring life saving surgery," she explains.

"From cases I’ve seen in practice, it is rarely just one hair tie that a cat swallows but multiple, often unnoticed and over a period of time. This is how blockages can occur. It is not worth taking the risk so please keep hair ties well out of reach or safely stowed away."

How to stop a cat playing with hair ties

According to Dr. MacMillan, the simplest way to ensure your kitty doesn't play with your hair ties is to keep them out of reach.

"Try keeping them in a dedicated drawer or a jewelry box, so that your cat can’t see them," she suggests. "Make sure that all your family members know not to leave hair ties lying around. The same goes for any elastic bands too."

Make sure that when you remove the hair ties you replace them with plenty of kitty-safe toys for your fur friend to play with. Cats get bored just like we do, so if you notice that they're grooming incessantly, vocalizing excessively, scratching the furniture or fighting with other cats, these are all signs your cat isn't getting what it needs to be happy.

"You must engage in regular play sessions and provide your cat with plenty of positive attention, to keep boredom at bay," Dr. MacMillan confirms. We recommend two play sessions a day of around 15 minutes each and for those times when you're too busy to engage with your kitty, having a few of the best automated cat toys– on hand can be a real lifesaver.

Both devices are quite similar in terms of setup and arrive fully assembled – all you need to do is plug them in. Before getting started, there are a few pre-checks: remove the cardboard and tape, check the bonnet tabs, and secure the key at the rear of the device. Then, place it on a flat, dry surface, preferably where your cat’s old litter box used to be.

The devices shouldn’t be pushed against a wall or into a corner – they need to be at least two to three inches away – and should be positioned near a plug socket.

Once it’s plugged in, add some clumping litter, turn it on, and run an initial cleaning cycle. Whisker advises against using litter that is absorbent, non-clumping, loosely clumping, or made from newspaper or wood-based pellets. Finally, turn it off while your cats get accustomed to it and gradually introduce them.

You can also purchase the LitterTrap Mat and ramp to help even further. While both models do a good job at containing litter, the 4 includes a fence to go one step further, but you'll need to buy this separately with the 3 Connect.

Both devices are similar in footprint size, with the Litter-Robot 3 Connect measuring 24.25’’ x 27’’ and the Litter-Robot 4 measuring 22’’ x 27’’. Our tester, Philip, was surprised at how large it looked in his home, so it's definitely worth measuring your space before committing to the purchase – especially since it can't be placed flat against a wall.

The Litter-Robot 4 has a larger entryway, measuring 15.75’’ x 15.75’’, making it a better choice for large cats and easier for them to climb into. The Litter-Robot 3 Connect measures 10.25’’ x 15.25’’, but our tester's cats didn’t have any problems getting inside – so it’s down to your preference.

However, it's worth bearing in mind that if you have cats under 3lbs, the automatic cleaning won’t work on the Litter-Robot 3 – but it will on the 4.

The Litter-Robot 4 wins this round, as it’s suitable for both larger cats and smaller kittens.

Litter-Robot 3 Connect vs 4: User experience

Lots of pet parents have concerns about whether their cat would actually use an automatic litter box, but both of our testers say their cats are happy to use these boxes and have adjusted well.

The Litter-Robot 4 features a SmartScale that can identify multiple cats using the box. You can set up profiles for them on the app and monitor their toilet habits, which is very helpful for spotting health conditions early.

For both versions, you can view the waste drawer levels in the app and be alerted when it's time to change, but with the 4, you can also see real-time litter and waste levels.

For safety purposes, both boxes have anti-pinch technology and weight-activated sensors, but the 4 has advanced sensor technology and greater accuracy, which stops cleaning when it detects motion or resistance inside.

Noise is another common question. While both testers were happy with the noise level, the Litter-Robot 4 has QuietSift technology, which makes less noise during cleaning.

The 4 is slightly smaller as well, but it's not enough of a difference to warrant spending more for this reason.

1. Diffusers and calming sprays aren’t magic: “They can help for a short time, but they don’t address why your cat is stressed,” explains Sayyed.

If we really want to help our cats, it’s best that we get to the root cause of their anxiety or frustration. Otherwise, we’re just papering over the issue.

2. Cats aren’t bothered about price tags: As Sayyed puts it, and as many of us cat parents know, “Your cat isn’t impressed by expensive toys – they’re happy with a crumpled paper ball or a simple wand toy. What they really need is ways to exhaust their physical and mental energy without causing chaos in your home.”

3. It’s better to understand than guess: The more you understand your cat’s behavior, the less you need to guess what the issue is.

“This means fewer unnecessary vet visits and fewer products gathering dust in your home. You will know what works and what does not work for you once you decode their personality,” Sayyed explains.

4. Marketing gimmicks fool us: “Food labels, litter claims, and gadgets all sound promising,” she continues, “But what your cat truly needs is often simpler and far less expensive – quality food, a stress-free environment, and the behavior training from you!”

1. Keep a diaper bin nearby

We’ve all been there. You pass your cat’s litter box to find it dirty, so you go to grab the scoop from outside but get distracted by another household task. Then when you remember what you were doing, you return with the scoop but realize you don’t have any poop bags. And so on.

This can slow down the process of cleaning up your cat's litter tray. Instead, make sure you keep everything you need at the litter box station, including fresh bags of the best cat litter, poop bags, a bin, the poop scoop, and some pet-friendly disinfectant spray.

3. Use clumping cat litter
Clumping cat litter can make it much easier to remove all of the contaminated litter because it sticks together and is easy to scoop. Poo bag dispensers aren’t just for dog owners to clip on their leads; these handy rolls are perfect for creating a litter box station. Just hang or mount the dispenser (like this one on Amazon) to the wall in easy reach and you’ll be able to grab a bag whenever you need to.

5. Use a litter box with high sides
It’s frustrating when you have to clean up litter that your cat has kicked all over the floor while burying their urine or feces. Using a covered litter box or one with high sides can help to keep the litter inside the box not all over the floor! However, bear in mind that not every cat will like a litter box of this style, and elderly cats especially might struggle to step into it.

6. Use a cat litter mat
Cat litter mats can also really help to keep cat litter off the floor and inside the box. The litter mats (like this one on Amazon) catch and trap the litter that’s stuck on your cat’s paws, stopping them from depositing it around the house!

7. Stack up the litter box liners
Doing a full change of your cat’s litter box can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. If you stack litter box liners (like these from Amazon) inside the tray, you can simply lift the top one, tie it, and throw it away, then add fresh litter to the one below. Of course, this will only work if the top liner is intact, so always check for leaks, but it’s a great way to save time.

8. Spot-clean the litter box daily
That’s right, you haven’t read it wrong! Spot-cleaning your cat’s litter box daily can actually help to reduce the overall cleanup time in the long run.

This is because cats are often put off by a dirty litter box, and may spend more time digging around trying to find a clean spot, spraying cat litter everywhere in the process. They might even abandon using the litter box altogether and just find an alternative spot behind the television or in the bathtub!

How often should you clean your cat’s litter box?

How often should you clean out your cat's litter box? The frequency that your cat’s litter box needs cleaning and how often you need to change the cat litter will vary, but if you’re spot-cleaning it every day and using clumping cat litter, you might find that they don’t need a full cat litter change and litter box clean more often than weekly. Of course, you’ll probably need to top it up with fresh cat litter in the meantime if it’s getting a little low.

However, it’s important to remember that if your cat has diarrhea, cystitis, or a urine infection, more of the cat litter will be contaminated, and they'll make more of a mess, so more frequent cleaning would be required.

As a general rule, the cat litter should be changed and the litter box cleaned with pet-friendly disinfectant once a week, or more often if the cat litter or box itself looks visibly dirty or wet.

Since Chilli and Nala have different capabilities, I like how you can adjust the difficulty so they can both have fun with it. The material feels sturdy and high-quality, plus it's free from BPA, PVC and phthalate, making it safe to eat from. After extensive testing, I voted this as one of the best cat toys.

3. Catstages Kitty Lickin' Layers Puzzle Cat Feeder

There are lots of reasons why I love this Catstages puzzle feeder, from the way it slows down my cat's eating to the high-quality, durable design. I like to fill it up with the best cat food for senior cats to give Chilli and Nala a bit of a mental workout – they have to lick it out of the holes or spin the compartments. Like most cats, Chilli and Nala can get behind any of the best cat treats, but these go further than just great taste. They're the perfect bite-sized shape for training and come in a resealable bag that's easy to store away. As for the ingredients, these treats contain salmon oil which is a brilliant source of omega-3 and promotes a healthy heart. They're crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle, and are made using real meat, offal and fish for better flavor.

5. MS!MAKESURE Rolls Pet Bowl

This is the best anti-vomit cat bowl I've tested and has massively improved Chilli's eating posture, thanks to the raised design. Not only is it a great height, but it also has a clever dual-bowl design that catches spills at the bottom (perfect for my messy cats!) The pastel pink design is right up my street and looks fab in my kitchen, but it also comes in green and blue if that's more your style. The bowl is easy to clean and can be put in the dishwasher after use which I was very happy about.

If your cat is a nap-a-holic like mine, it's important to give them a comfortable sleeping spot (especially since they sleep for 15 hours of the day!) Cats can be very selective about where they snooze, so choosing the best cat hammock or best cat bed can sometimes feel like a gamble.

That's why I'm thrilled to see how much Nala loves the Zakkart Foldable Cat Hammock we got her – in fact, it's hard to get her out of it! The bed is lined with soft, fluffy padding and has raised sides where she can rest her head and relax. I knew it was a winner when she chose to sleep there instead of on my bed, which is really saying something.

If you have small windows, this hammock is a great choice because it doesn't take up too much space, and works well on any glass or shiny surface. I mounted it to our banister panels on the landing and I love how I get to see her more throughout the day.

Unlike other cat hammocks, this one has a foldable design which makes it easy to store away. It comes in two different sizes, measuring 21.6" x 14.0" x 8.0" or 23.6" x 15.3" x 8.0", and three colors: white, gray and brown.

Usually, white surfaces and pets don't mix well, but this hammock is so easy to clean that it hasn't been an issue. I vacuum her fur off it once a week, and it looks as good as new afterward. You can also detach the bed from the frame and put it in the washing machine when it needs a deeper clean.

This hammock is the best thing I've got her by far and she never gets bored of it – I highly recommend it to fellow cat parents.

If you've ever questioned, “What is silver vine?”, then you're not alone. Although most people have heard of catnip, it actually only affects two in three cats. This means some kitties don’t seem to get the same reaction from smelling catnip or playing with the best catnip toys. So, could silver vine be a good alternative?

I’ve been a vet for eight years, and I’ve fostered many cats in my time. Most of them responded to catnip, but it’s always a bit disappointing when they don’t.

Although silvervine has been used in cats for decades, it has only recently become more widespread – probably thanks to the internet! In fact, it’s so popular now that there are even studies investigating its use.

Below, I've explained what silvervine is, how it’s used, and whether it’s safe for cats to use.

What is silver vine?

Silver vine (Actinidia polygama) is a fast-growing climbing plant that’s related to kiwi fruit. It grows in mountainous areas of Asia, particularly Korea, Japan, and China.

In traditional Chinese medicine, silver vine has many uses and is also called matatabi, but it’s also known as cat powder because of its effect on cats. This was first documented in 1906, when the silver vine plant was imported to Harvard Arboretum and the observed effect on local cats was published in the journal Science.

Silver vine is more popular than catnip in Japan, where cat owners have probably been using it for its euphoric effect for centuries! Don’t be surprised if you haven’t heard of it before though – most Australian and US vets haven’t either! In fact, it’s only because I spend so much of my time writing and researching that I’ve come across it – it’s very new to the Western world!

What does silver vine do to cats?

Like catnip, the smell of silver vine can make cats react strangely, causing them to roll and rub their cheeks and faces. While we don’t know exactly why, it’s thought that natural plant chemicals related to nepetalactone (the compound in catnip) are the cause.

Since these chemicals are natural insect repellents, cats may have evolved to behave like this around silver vine because the behavior spreads the chemicals on their fur, helping them prevent mosquito bites. Another possibility is that these chemicals mimic scents used by cats to communicate.

Silver vine and catnip are good enrichment for cats – they improve a cat’s welfare by providing them with a different scent that they seem to enjoy. When cats respond to these smells, they can cause an increase in positive behaviors like cat play.

Which cats is silvervine good for?

There’s no information about which cats are more likely to react to silvervine – they seem to react equally whether they’re male or female, young or old.

Most cats do respond to it, especially if they don’t respond to catnip, so why not give it a go? If your cat doesn’t respond to silver vine or catnip, you might want to give up. While there’s a small chance they’ll respond to Tatarian honeysuckle or valerian root, only 3% of cats that didn’t respond to catnip or silvervine did respond to one of these two (according to this study).

Is silver vine stronger than catnip?

While catnip only produces one iridoid compound at a high level, silver vine produces several related compounds, especially when the leaves are damaged. This combined smell seems to be more exciting to cats, and cats respond more strongly to silver vine than catnip in this study.

Another study also found that cats responded more intensely to silver vine. In this study, they tested 100 cats to see which of four plants they responded to best. They found that eight in 10 cats responded to silver vine, while only seven out of 10 responded to catnip.

The study also found that the response to silver vine was more intense. In addition, of the three in 10 cats that didn’t respond to catnip, 70% responded to silver vine, meaning silver vine is a good option for cats that don’t respond to catnip. What about types of silver vine?

The type of silvervine used seems to make a difference. One very small study suggests cats do respond to dried fruits, but only if the fruit was infected with a parasitic insect causing a ‘gall’.

These silver vine fruit galls can make good natural cat toys when dried. Silver vine sticks are less likely to cause the ‘catnip effect’, causing only one in five to respond in the study, likely because they have lower amounts of the necessary chemicals.

The leaves seem to work well, regardless of whether the plant had been grown in Asia (and therefore likely attacked by the parasitic midge) or in the USA.

Is silver vine safe for cats?

Like catnip, silver vine appears to be safe for cats. They don’t get addicted, and continuous use didn’t cause stress changes in the blood, or kidney or liver injury in this study.

While the study population was small, they checked cats over a three-year period and didn’t identify any causes for concern. We also know that silver vine has been used in Japan for a long time and if its use caused problems, we would expect to see higher rates of diseases there.

Choosing the best cat food bowl can help to tackle whisker stress and cat acne. A good bowl can also aid digestive health. Here is what you should be looking for when considering the perfect bowl for your feline.

Material: Examine what a bowl is made of. Plastic bowls with playful designs might look cute but many cats have an allergy to plastic which gives them nasty bumps and blackheads on their chin. To minimize the possibility of a reaction, opt for stainless steel, ceramic or eco-friendly materials such as bamboo.

Size and shape: To help avoid whisker stress, think size and shape. If your kitty is prone to lifting food out of their bowl and dropping it on the floor, their current bowl may be too small meaning their whiskers are touching the sides. Wide bowls help to prevent this.

Depth: Deep bowls that are elevated and tilted forward are worth considering if your cats make a mess or suffer from digestive issues. They allow your cat to maintain a more natural posture which reduces neck strain and makes digesting food easier.

Smart features: Choosing one of the best automatic pet feeders is fantastic if you’re often away from home. You can program the feeder to dispense wet or dry cat food at certain times throughout the day. And, just like the best smart pet bowls, they’re also a good option for monitoring portion control and managing your cat’s weight.

Elevated cat food bowl: If you are asking yourself, “should I elevate my cat’s food bowl?” then chances are your feline has digestive difficulties. An elevated cat food bowl will help your cat swallow, aided by gravity. They are also ideal for older felines who experience problems in their joints, including arthritis or stiff muscles.

A raised bowl is also hygienic and clean. Since the bowl sits off the ground, spillage is reduced and the extra height can help reduce dust and fur particles landing in your feline's meal. They do tend to be more expensive than the average bowl, however. 

Automatic feeders: When you're out of the home, an automatic feeder is a convenient and fun way to deliver your kitty their next meal. These machines can typically be programmed to feed your cat with their usual amount of food, but some feeders may end up feeding them too much due to auto-filling once a cat's dish becomes empty. Convenient but they can be expensive.

Traditional cat food bowl: This is likely to be the option you're most familiar with. A traditional cat food bowl is often made from ceramic or stainless steel; its circular design is simple and functional. There are typically no bells and whistles but you'll likely want to consider the material. For instance, if your feline is prone to food spillages, heavy ceramic can be a great choice.

What kind of cat food bowl is best?

There is no single perfect cat bowl, according to Dr. Joanna Woodnutt. Like humans, cats are unique so a bowl that works for one might not necessarily work for another. 

“Felines are finicky,” she explains. “Having said that, it’s best to get a cat food bowl made of porcelain or glass, as plastic can harbor bacteria and metal can taint the food. Most cats like a shallow, large bowl.”

It’s easy to think that your cat doesn’t care what you serve their food in, but studies have shown that they really do care about how their meals are served. 

A study in the journal Animal Cognition showed that domestic cats don’t like to work for their food — they want an effortless meal served up in an easy-to-access bowl. This rules out some bowls with harsh edges and high sides, or those that are too low down and force your moggy to bend down to eat. 

Is it better for cats to eat from an elevated bowl?

Whether you’re considering an elevated bowl or even asking “do anti-vomit cat bowls work?”, then the answer lies with your cat. “Most cats will be fine with their bowl on the ground, although for some an elevated bowl may help,” Dr Woodnutt advises. 

“Cats with arthritis will often benefit from an elevated bowl. You’ll find many cats still take their food and drop it on the floor, then eat it on the floor - so don’t expect too much.”

Are tilted bowls better for cats?

There is there's no 'right' type of food bowl, and it's important to consider your cat's individual preferences.  With that said, there are some instances in which a titled bowl could be the right choice. 

"It's thought that tilted bowls help cats with arthritis eat more comfortably." says Dr Rebecca MacMillan. That might sound like a niche case, but a study in Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association showed that 90% of cats over 12 show signs of arthritis. 

"If you think about how a cat eats or drinks, they often hunch on their elbows with their shoulders forward, so it isn't hard to see how getting into a less hunched position would put less strain on painful joints." explains Dr MacMillan.

How we selected the best cat food bowls

So how did we select the best cat food bowls for this guide? Well, we focussed on three key areas: the material the bowls are made from, their size and depth, and the overall design. We also wanted to ensure we included a few bowls with smarter features, such as elevated bowls and automatic feeders.

Material: We’ve avoided the use of plastic bowls in this guide. While they’re cheap and convenient, they are more likely to harbor bacteria. We’ve opted for safe and healthy alternatives instead, such as ceramic, silicone and stainless steel. 

Size and depth: We’re mindful that cats favor large, shallow bowls because they are less likely to irritate their whiskers. We’ve mostly included such bowls, with a few notable exceptions such as the automatic pet feeder. This product, while shallow, does not have high sides, however, and therefore won’t cause irritation. 

Overall design: We’ve included a range of designs in this guide, from the simple yet effective to the more elaborate and stylish. You’ll also note that aside from appearance, the cat food bowls above span the range of what’s available on the market right now, such as automatic feeders that give you more flexibility in your day and elevated models, which can help prevent digestive disturbances. 

When it comes to our cats, we all love to treat them when we can. From tasty treats and catnip to toy mice and feather toys, there are all manner of products out there that we hope will make our feline friends happy!

But while some of the best cat treats in moderation won’t go amiss, nor would a good cat tree, it might not be the best idea to spend a lot of money on expensive cat toys. Certified cat behavior psychologist Saba Sayyed, or A Cat Psychologist, has explained why this might be the case in a recent Instagram post, and it’s certainly worth considering!

“Do not waste money on expensive toys for cats,” Sayyed says. “Instead, put your money on buying good quality cat trees, good quality wet and raw food, and a water fountain.”

She explains that, when you do buy toys, it’s a good idea to buy ones that imitate prey animals like insects, birds, and other small animals. This is because cats are predators, and the way they play often mimics hunting.

And, while we often make jokes about cats liking the box a toy comes in more than the toy itself, there is often some truth there. In Sayyed’s video, she shows her cat, Rya, rolling around in a box that once held Valentine’s Day flowers, but is now full of catnip.

You don’t have to be a pro – but you will save some money and at the same time, you can allow your cat to tap into their natural instincts through play with toys targeted right to them.

Play is important for cats, can help you bond with them, and keeps both their mind and body active. But don’t feel under pressure to buy the most expensive toys you see – as long as your cat has good food and a nice cat tree, if you have space for one, it’s best to focus on the function of toys, rather than the price.

And, in short, your cat is more likely to appreciate you engaging in play with them than they are a host of expensive cat toys.

If you live in a rented property or simply don’t want to install a cat flap, cat door alternatives can allow your pet the same freedom, without any permanent damage to your home. 

It’s already stressful enough to move house with a cat and when you get there, it can be even more difficult to introduce them to a new environment, both indoors and outdoors. Our guide on how to move house with a cat is a good place to start.

While you can learn how to train a cat to use a cat door, this might not be an option for everybody, so you may need to employ alternative methods to let your cat explore. 

Here are some of the best cat door alternatives: 

1. Pet door for sliding windows or sash windows

For a horizontal sliding window, you can get a solid or glass panel with a pet door already installed in it that slots into the open window. You will likely need this custom-made to fit your window measurements, but there are lots of companies out there offering this service for a reasonable price.

In comparison to a regular cat flap, the installation of a window-mounted pet door is much easier, with most using the window itself to hold it in place. You can also get some that clip into place. If you have security concerns, you can purchase a lock for sliding windows or window wedges to hold the window closed on the flap panel from the inside, so it cannot fall out of place.

Depending on what you order, you should be able to get a variety of flap sizes to fit your window and your cat, with the flap working just like a regular one. If you still want to be able to see out of your window, some are made from plexiglass so as not to spoil your view.

Some companies also offer the addition of a microchip cat flap, which allows selective entry to pets who have a chip on their collar, keeping out unwanted guests. Check out our buying guide for the best microchip cat flaps.

Flaps for vertical sliding windows work in a similar way, but instead of using the weight of the window to hold them in place as is the case with a sash or horizontal sliding window, you are more likely to need a window wedge to keep it secure.

2. Pet door for sliding glass door or French windows

Similar to the concept of cat flaps for windows, you can also get them to fit onto sliding glass doors and French windows. Instead of placing them horizontally, these panels fit vertically and are held in place by the siding door. The cat flap is preinstalled at the bottom of the panel, with a variety of options and sizes available. 

The downside of this choice is that it might not be as secure or warm as when the doors are fully closed. However, sliding doors are usually more standardized sizes than windows, so you are more likely to find retailers selling pre-made options, rather than commissioning someone to build a custom door for you. Many of them come with the option of locks for the sliding doors and the pet door itself.

3. Door latch

A nice, simple solution that works well when you’re at home a lot is a door latch. Prop the door open to the right size for your pet to pass through as they please. While this won’t work when you’re out of the house as it becomes a security risk, it is an easy way to keep your home warm and still fully accessible to your pet without leaving all the doors open. They’re also great for preventing babies from pulling doors closed on themselves. 

4. Window latch

A more practical option for the security-conscious, you latch an upper-story window (that your cat can reach) open. This allows your cat the freedom they desire, without compromising the safety of your home. While these latches prop the window open, they also prevent it from being opened any further, so there’s no need to worry about coming back to a cold house. 

5. Consider having an indoor cat 

Sometimes the obvious answer is to get yourself an indoor cat. If you’re wondering, the main difference between indoor vs outdoor cats is that outdoor cats have access to the outside, while indoor cats are limited to the home. Some cats self-impose this restriction on themselves and have no interest in going outside, while others might need a little more persuasion to stay in. 

There are pros and cons for you and your cat if they are indoors all the time, but for cats with allergies and health issues, a life indoors is often the only option.

It’s easy to make mistakes when it comes to managing your kitty’s litter boxes. But fortunately, they’re easy to rectify too. Molly Kelsey, AKA  The Cat Counsellor, has outlined five common mistakes that cat parents often make with litter boxes, and how to avoid them, in a recent Instagram post – some of them hadn’t even occurred to us!

1. There’s not enough of them: Can cats share a litter box? As Kelsey explains, not having enough litter boxes can cause house soiling and stress-related behaviors too. These might include marking, overgrooming, and furniture scratching. So, it’s a good idea to have one litter box per cat, and then an extra one. 

2. Not keeping the litter box clean: “Cats by nature are clean animals and will find being forced to use a dirty litter box an unpleasant experience, or they may refuse to use it altogether,” says Kelsey.

“Scoop waste as soon as possible and dispose of it away from the litter box. Ensure that the box is cleaned and litter is replaced regularly i.e. weekly.”

3. The size and shape of the litter box aren’t suited to your cat: Several factors, including your cat’s size, physical capabilities, and simply their personal preferences, will influence the sort of litter box they like. 

While all cats are different, as a general rule it’s a good idea to go for litter boxes at least 1.5x the size of your cat. Meanwhile, for older or disabled cats, it makes sense to choose a low-sided box. 

4. Wrong type of litter substrate: Kelsey explains, “Many litters on the market are made to cater to us, rather than the cats who use it. Fragrances and odor-control powders are common additives, which can irritate a cat’s airways and sense of smell.”

There are many different types of cat litter, but it’s best to choose litter that’s low-dust and non-fragranced, and that’s made from small pellets or a sand-like substance, so that it clumps together and better absorbs liquid.

5. Unsuitable location for toileting: “While a litter box isn't the most aesthetic item in the home,” says Kelsey, “Where they are located goes a long way in being appealing to your cats for daily use.”

Go for quiet and private locations, if you can, and try to make sure that other important resources – including other litter boxes as well as things like food and water bowls – are away from each litter box.

If you’ve taken on board these steps, but you’re still dealing with issues like soiling in the house, it’s a good idea to consult your vet. There may be a medical reason for your kitty’s behavior – or at the very least, you can rule serious health concerns out.

Your cat peeing outside the litter box can be frustrating, and that’s totally understandable. It’s an unexpected mess you need to clean up, and it might seem totally out of character for your feline friend. 

However, as annoying as it might be, it may not be a case of your cat simply deciding to be awkward and turning their nose up at even the best cat litter. There could be an underlying issue causing them to pee outside the litter box, and while it may not be anything sinister, it could be a sign of something more serious. 

Fortunately, certified cat behavior psychologist Saba Sayyed, who goes by the name A Cat Psychologist, has produced an invaluable checklist for cat parents to go through should their cat pee outside the litter box, so if you want to know how to stop your cat peeing on the carpet, you’re in the right place. 

It’s important to rule out any medical conditions first – it’s better to be safe than sorry. So, Sayyed recommends a vet checkup, as your kitty might have a urinary tract infection or a kidney infection. Then, if you’ve not done so yet, it’s a good idea to get them neutered or spayed.

“Add scent soakers … all over the house where they can put their scent on,” is the next tip in Sayyed’s list. These are things your cat can put their scent on, like beds, blankets, and scratchers. She recommends putting at least one in each room. 

Her next advice is to keep an eye out for outdoor cats, and look for ways to deter them, and then to clean the cat pee using natural and unscented cleaners, like vinegar and baking soda. 

Another thing she advises is to “add an additional easy-to-access litter box with a different kind of litter and place it in a new open space at home”, in case your cat had a negative experience in the previous litter box. 

Your cat might be peeing outside the litter box because she’s stressed, so it’s also a good idea to bring down stress levels in the home. You could try using things like cat calming sprays, keeping the noise down, and bonding with your cat through things like slow eye blinks.

Cats defecating and urinating outside of their litter box is a common problem faced by many feline pet parents, and we understand what an unpleasant issue it is to be dealing with. 

A cat peeing outside the litter box (or worse, pooping!) may seem like a deliberate behavior designed to upset you, but rest assured your kitty isn't trying to be difficult.

"Behavior issues are complex," explains registered vet technician and certified cat behavior consultant, Tabitha Kucera, "But just like cats need enrichment, water, and food, they also need an appropriate litter box setup from the start! ⁣This can help to prevent many issues and decrease stress for cats. Once you've ruled out an underlying health condition that could be driving your cat to pee and defecate outside their litter box, the next step is to ensure you have the right litter box setup. To help you do that, Kucera has put together what she calls her ABC's of litterboxes:

A = Accessible: The first thing Kucera recommends is making sure that the litter boxes you choose are easy for your cat to access. A good rule of thumb is to have one litter box per cat plus an extra one. So, if you have one cat, that means two litter boxes, if you have two cats, that means three litter boxes. Place them throughout your home, including all levels of a multilevel home.

"Many cats prefer to urinate in one box and defecate in another," explains Kucera. "Also, older cats and cats with medical issues that cause them to go to the bathroom frequently require easy access to a litter box."

B = Big: "Make sure the litter boxes are big enough to comfortably accommodate your cat," Kucera advises. "Litter boxes should be 1.5 times the length of your cat and your cat should be able to turn around in it - you wouldn't want to use an airplane sized bathroom all the time and neither does your cat." C = Clean: Kucera says it's important that you clean your cat's litter box regularly and scoop it daily. "Dump and wash the litter boxes with a mild soap every 4-6 weeks and avoid strong, aversive cleaning agents, like bleach." Kucera recommends clumping clay litter as most cats prefer this over other types of cat litter and unscented and dust-free is also preferable. However, be led by your feline friend as to which litter to use. "Let your cat choose which litter they prefer. If your cat prefers a specific litter, don't change it."

If you’ve ever watched your cat gorge themselves on food and then immediately vomit that undigested food up onto your brand-new living room rug, you may have asked yourself, “do anti-vomit cat bowls work?” After all, these bowls are often touted on the internet as a solution to all feline vomiting problems! 

Unfortunately, there’s no simple, straightforward answer to that question. The efficacy of anti-vomit cat bowls depends on your specific cat and the underlying cause of their vomiting. In most cases, a combination of veterinary care and some trial-and-error are needed to address repetitive vomiting in cats.

Some cats vomit due to an underlying medical condition. Even if your cat is eating the best dry cat food, conditions like intestinal parasites, foreign body obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease, dietary insensitivity, and some intestinal cancers can lead to chronic vomiting. Clearly, an anti-vomit food bowl is unlikely to significantly improve these conditions. Cats with a serious underlying medical condition need veterinary care, including diagnostic testing and effective treatment. 

In some cases, however, vomiting has a more benign cause. Maybe your cat simply ingests their food more quickly than they can digest it, leading to an overly-full stomach and vomiting. If this is the case, switching to the best anti-vomit bowl for cats and making some other simple modifications to your cat’s diet and routine may be all that’s needed to successfully address your cat’s vomiting. Puzzle bowls can also prevent a cat eating too fast.

Why do cats throw up after eating?

There are many possible causes of post-meal vomiting. A variety of gastrointestinal conditions are associated with vomiting, including intestinal parasites, food allergies, inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal cancer, and intestinal foreign bodies (toys or other objects that become trapped in the intestines and lead to an obstruction). Feline vomiting can also be caused by systemic diseases, such as diabetes, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, and others. 

If you’re wondering what to do if your cat is throwing up, your first step should be a visit to your veterinarian. Your veterinarian will obtain a thorough medical history, asking a number of questions about your cat’s vomiting habits. Next, your veterinarian will perform a thorough physical exam. During this exam, your veterinarian will look for signs of weight loss and dehydration. Your cat’s abdomen will be palpated thoroughly, looking for any abdominal masses or thickening of the intestines. Finally, your veterinarian will look for signs of other illnesses that may be associated with vomiting. Based on your cat’s medical history and exam findings, your veterinarian may be able to start narrowing down the potential causes of your cat’s post-meal vomiting.

Next, your veterinarian will recommend appropriate diagnostic testing. These tests may include a fecal parasite examination, complete blood cell count (CBC), serum biochemistry profile, and thyroid panel. A fecal parasite exam is used to look for intestinal parasites that may cause vomiting, while blood tests can be used to look for conditions occurring outside of the intestinal tract (such as diabetes, renal failure, hyperthyroidism, etc.). Your veterinarian may also recommend imaging, such as abdominal radiographs (x-rays) and/or abdominal ultrasound, to look for signs of masses, foreign bodies, and other changes in the structure of the gastrointestinal tract. Additional testing may include intestinal biopsies (to look for microscopic changes within the gastrointestinal tract) or a food trial (to rule out food allergies).

In some cases, the cause of post-meal vomiting cannot be identified, even after an extensive workup. There are several theories about why cats may vomit after meals in the absence of an underlying medical issue. Some cats eat very quickly, which may cause their stomach to become overly full, resulting in vomiting. Some cats may be sensitive to certain food textures; dry cat food, for example, may irritate the walls of the stomach in some cats and make the cat more likely to vomit after eating. In some cats, neither of these possible causes appears to be involved and the cause of post-meal vomiting remains a mystery.

Do cats need elevated bowls?

If a thorough medical workup has ruled out underlying gastrointestinal disease, some owners turn to elevated food bowls that are designed to reduce post-meal vomiting in cats. The theory behind these bowls is that cats who eat quickly, especially those eating from a bowl on the ground, are more likely to have food become retained within the esophagus instead of moving all the way to the stomach. Food that remains trapped in the esophagus is not held in place by a sphincter and therefore may be regurgitated after the cat eats. The use of a raised bowl is intended to help food move “downhill,” using gravity, from the mouth, to the esophagus, to the stomach. In theory, this may make the regurgitation of undigested food less likely.

While some owners report success with elevated food bowls, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that they are necessary or beneficial. There is no medical reason that cats need to eat from an elevated bowl; if you think of cats in the wild, they typically eat their prey off the ground. It certainly wouldn’t hurt your cat to try an elevated anti-vomiting bowl, but this may or may not help reduce the frequency of your cat’s vomiting.

Are there other anti-vomiting cat bowls that can help cats?

While raised food bowls may have unpredictable results, there is another intervention that veterinarians often recommend for cats with unexplained vomiting after eating. This is a slow-feeder bowl, also known as a puzzle feeder. These food bowls contain obstacles that force cats to slow down and eat their food one bite at a time, instead of “inhaling” their food (as many cats are prone to do). If you would prefer a more active alternative to a conventional slow feeder, you can even purchase a hunting feeder. Hunting feeders operate under a similar principle, dispensing food slowly, but also provide your cat with a bit more physical activity. 

While there is limited evidence to support the effect of puzzle feeders on vomiting, their use is associated with many other benefits, including stress reduction. Anecdotally, many veterinarians have seen puzzle feeders effectively used to decrease post-meal vomiting in cats that do not have an underlying medical condition at the root of their vomiting. 

Does a raised food bowl help reduce vomiting?

The answer to the question “do anti-vomit cat bowls work?” is not a straightforward one. There is no direct evidence to demonstrate that elevated bowls or puzzle feeders are effective in reducing post-meal vomiting. However, many veterinarians report positive results when feeding cats from a slow feeder or puzzle feeder, as long as other medical conditions have been ruled out, and some cat owners find that elevated bowls are beneficial. If your cat is regularly vomiting after meals, talk to your veterinarian. They can help you rule out underlying medical causes of the vomiting and provide guidance on the best food and food bowls for your cat.

Toby says these features are all "reassuring".

With so many features, you might be under the impression that it's hard to install, but Toby confirms that this isn't the case.

He says: "Setup was very simple. There's a paper guide for the cut holes to make, it fits tightly with little draft, and setting up the cats is just a case of putting them on one side, pushing a button, and coaxing them through the flap with some treats. The Connect app is simple enough and can have multiple users, allowing notifications for cats coming/going and changing curfew times, etc."

Toby also notes that you can select which cats get access outside and which ones do not – perfect for when cats need to stay inside due to things like medical issues. He's also linked his cat flap to his Home Assistant [a home automation system]. This allows him to set up other automations, like turning the lights on and off when he wants to know his cat is home for his medication.

Our tester Toby tried out the SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap, which he describes in three words as "reliable, robust and simple".

Toby says it's easy to use and very simple – to register a cat, you just need to push a button and coax them through the cat flap with some treats. The device can store up to 32 different cats, and even if you take out the batteries, it will still remember every pet.

The cat flap comes with a paper template to give you a helping hand with cutting the doors. However, if you're thinking of installing it in glass or a metal door, you'll need to buy their mounting adaptor separately (available on Amazon). And if it's going in a wall, you'll need their tunnel extender (also available on Amazon).

Toby says: "It works great, [I] had some issues with the lock mechanism being popped off by our cat, but [it] was replaced half a dozen times by SureFlap without any questions (and their newer models reportedly fixed the issue entirely)."

You'll need four AA batteries to get started and when the charge starts to run low, you'll be notified with a flashing light. Toby says it's easy to clean as it's smooth plastic.

Best microchip cat flap for simplicity

I've grown up with cats all my life, so I'm very familiar with stray cats entering the house (and the chaos that unfolds afterward). I've been woken up countless times to the sound of screeching in the kitchen at 3am so when I found out a microchip cat flap could put a stop to this, I was overjoyed.

This PetSafe option features a four-way manual locking system and can register up to 40 cats per home (a girl can dream). Not only was it super easy to install but it also features two magnetic closing points to help keep the draught out. This makes it a great energy efficient option, something that's important to most people (including myself). It's also one of the cheapest options in this guide, proof that you don't need to spend the most to get results.

I was pleasantly surprised at just how easy it was to connect to my cat's microchip. I simply held down the button for five seconds, popped her head through and it was good to go. As someone who hates reading instructions, I can vouch for these – they were simple to follow, clear to read, and didn't require 100 fiddly steps.

However, if you want to install it onto a metal door, you'll need to buy an installation adaptor separately (these are around $15 on Amazon). The same goes for walls or double-glazed glass. It's compatible with 15-digit microchip numbers (FDX-B, 977 and 985), as well as the PetSafe Microchip Cat Door Key which can be attached to the collar.

Nala the cat was a little cautious of the cat flap at first (like she is with everything) and it took her a few tries to get used to it. But the cat flap does what it says on the tin and opens every time for her, just as promised.

You'll need four AA batteries to get started, and the cat flap will flash every 10 seconds if it's running low on charge. This means you'll have plenty of time to replace the batteries and your furry friend won't be left in the cold!

This model is pretty similar to the SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap, except from the slightly larger dimensions and a lower price point.

Best microchip cat flap with timer control

If you want a bit more control over your cat flap (without downloading yet another app), then the Cat Mate Elite Microchip Cat Flap with Timer Control is for you.

This model features an LCD screen that shows you whether your cat is in or out, the lock status, and the last time the door was used. For the latter, it can do this for up to three cats. If you're lucky enough to own more than 10 cats, you'll want to pick another model (like the SureFlap Microchip Cat Door Connect with Hub Bundle) because this has a limit of nine registrations.

The cat flap is compatible with nine, 10, and 15-digit microchips, as well as the Cat Mate ID Discs, which can be bought separately on Amazon. You'll be pleased to hear that it's draught- and weather-proof, thanks to the magnetic closure and sealed flap. If you're hoping to install this in a wall, it's worth noting that you'll need to buy the Cat Mate Elite Wall Liners separately, but these cost less than $15.

It only took me five minutes and a few easy steps to program the cat flap to the ID disk. The setup was really simple and the instructions weren’t difficult to follow. You need four AA batteries to turn it on, which are a little difficult to put in but should last you a year. I struggled to connect it to my cat’s microchips, but the ID disc worked fine and easily clipped onto their collar (it even had space to write my contact details on).

The timer control allows you to set a curfew for your cat – something that will definitely come in handy for my cats, Nala and Chilli! One thing to keep in mind is that your cat needs to press their head onto the flap for it to open, which might take a little while for them to get used to.

You can either have an external power source for the cat flap, or it can be battery powered. There are pros and cons to each – but batteries are often considered better overall as it gives you maximum flexibility over where to place the flap, there’s no chance of creating trip hazards with wires, and they’ll keep working even if the power supply is otherwise interrupted.

If you do decide to go for a battery-powered cat flap, you might want to look for one that offers an indicator as to when the battery is running low so you can recharge or replace the batteries.

2. Size of cat

You’ll need to make sure that whatever cat flap you buy fits your feline friend with ease. This might sound obvious, but it’s worth double-checking the size of the aperture against the size of your cat, particularly if yours is on the large side.

You’ll also need to think about whether the flap is suitably sized for where you intend to install it – such as a back door. Some will need extra accessories or adapters around the flap, which should be taken into account too.

3. Weather resistance

If you live somewhere that is prone to lots of rain or snow, you should also look for flaps that promise to withstand tough weather conditions.

Do microchip cat flaps work?

Simple answer? Yes, they do. Once you have set them up – and assuming the batteries have not run out – these cat flaps will recognize your moggies by reading the microchip implanted into their neck, thereby allowing the little door to open. The flap should then close behind your cat and not allow any other felines with an unrecognizable chip to enter, giving a feline peace of mind.

There is, however, one way an intruder cat may be able to get in: by tailgating. This is rather unavoidable because a neighborhood cat can easily get up close to your feline's bottom and seize the opportunity to enter while the flap is still fully open. Another animal could also place a sneaky paw within an open door to prevent it from closing again.

One thing's for sure, the microchip cat flap isn't going to forcibly push a tailgating cat back but such incidents are going to be rare. In most cases, once a flap has closed again, it will lock within seconds. It's also worth pointing out that a microchip cat flap won't stop your moggy from voluntarily bringing in small animals, alive or dead, either.

The microchip cat flap itself should last for years – it's the batteries that will fail first. Not to worry, though, because they're easily replaceable and, if you opt for rechargeable ones, they're not going to be especially costly or inconvenient in the long run either.

The good news is that the microchip inside your cat should last for a lifetime. They are inserted into your cat by a vet and they are not known to fail or break.

Is it worth getting a microchip cat flap?

Microchip cat flaps are built with a sensor that uses radio frequency identification, and most devices can save up to 30 different microchip numbers. When a cat approaches the door, it reads their chip to see if it matches the ones saved.

Every vet will have their own price, depending on the practice and location, but most are reasonable to encourage pet parents to get their cats microchipped.

Expert vet Dr. Rebecca MacMillan says: "In the UK, you can expect to pay between somewhere £10–30. Some will say it’s a small price worth paying to increase the chances of being reunited with a missing pet! Not to mention that it is now a legal requirement in some countries."

This teaser toy is a great way to keep your furry friend fit and active – they'll have hours of fun chasing the colorful ribbon, which is available in two colors. Not only does it encourage their natural instincts to hunt and pounce, but it’s also a fantastic chance for a bonding session.

The toy comes highly recommended by our tester Julie Johnson and her pets, Holly and Max. She suggests it for all cats, especially those who are older, kept indoors, or just need a little bit more exercise.

Julie says: “My cats both love pouncing on anything slinky that moves. I flip it around on the bed and sling the ribbon over the edge, and they jump up to attack it.”

When buying a new cat toy, durability is key. Julie was pleased to find that this one lasted well through testing and appeared to be well-made. The best catnip cat toy

If your kitty loves catnip, they’re going to adore the Catit Groovy Fish – I’ve never tested anything quite like it. My cats usually lose interest in these kinds of toys within a couple of days, but thanks to the refillable catnip pocket in this one, my cat Chilli keeps coming back to it and doesn’t seem to get bored. It also comes with a tube of catnip, which has lasted me for months and is really handy to top it up.

When the stomach is tapped or bitten into, the fish flips from side to side, mimicking the movements of prey and triggering your cat’s natural hunting instincts. While the manufacturer says there are three different movement modes to choose from, the fish appears to move in the same way every time for me, but this isn't a problem.

In the last edition of this guide, I voted the Pioneer Pet Catnip Toy Nip Nibblers and Planet Pleasures Spiral Cylinder as the best catnip toys, but I found that the catnip wore off over time. Since the Groovy Fish has a refillable pocket for the catnip, it has lasted me so much longer in comparison.

The fish makes a slightly annoying noise when it's moving around, but it doesn't stop me from using it as I love how happy it makes Chilli. If this bothers you, you can manually turn off the automated feature and give it to your cat as a regular plush toy. It comes with a USB-C charger and the battery life is pretty good, lasting up to 250 rounds.

The best puzzle cat toy

If your cat has never tried a puzzle before, the Buggin' Out toy is a great one to start with. There are eight compartments to hide their treats in, and they'll have to spin the pegs and leaves to retrieve them.

My cat Chilli hasn’t always been the biggest fan of puzzle toys, so this is a great easy option for beginners like him; he used both his nose and paws to claim the food. I store the toy in my guest room, and now and then, he’ll seek it out to play with – he's become a huge fan! My other cat, Nala, has loved this toy from day one and whenever I get it out, she follows me around, eager to give it a try.

This toy is made from high-quality materials and feels very durable. The design is BPA, PVC, and phthalate-free, which is always important for toys involving treats. It costs under $19, which I think it's excellent value for money based on the quality, durability and how much my cats enjoy playing with it.

The only drawback is that it moves around on hard flooring, but this can be resolved by placing it on carpet or some type of mat. While the manufacturer says it's possible to adapt the difficulty level, it's still pretty easy no matter how you set it up. That being said, it's never too easy and stimulates my cats each time.

In the previous edition of this guide, I voted the Nina Ottosson Rainy Day Puzzle as one of the best cat toys, but decided to narrow it down to just the Buggin' Out Puzzle, which is suitable for more abilities.

The best tunnel cat toy

Our freelance writer, Kathryn, voted the Pawaboo Cat Tunnel Tube Toy as her top pick in our interactive cat toy guide, and it's easy to see why. Like most cats, her curious kitty Roxy couldn't resist taking a peek inside and loves hiding in it before she catches her teaser toy 'prey' on the outside.

The tunnel comes with a bell, a ball, and a peep hole in the middle to make things more interesting. If you buy two, you can attach them together, giving your cat even more space to explore.

It comes with additional balls and bells, which the manufacturer claims will keep your cat entertained for hours, but Roxy wasn't too fussed about them. However, she enjoys it when Kathryn waves a teaser toy at the entrance points (you could pair it with the Frisco Teaser Wand recommended in this guide).

Kathryn says she loves how easy it is to assemble and notes that the elastic band it comes with makes it effortless to store away. The tubes pop out easily, though it can be a bit of a challenge to fold them back together again.

The lightweight and compact design is ideal for traveling and makes it easy to store away when needed. You can even pop it out in the car for some on-the-go entertainment!

While the tunnel arrived with a rip at the seam, this may have happened during transit, and Kathryn says it’s holding up well after months of frequent play. For under $24, this is excellent value for money.

The SmartyKat Bouncy Mouse is my top pick for interactive play and does a great job of tapping into your cat's natural hunting instincts. A fluffy mouse is attached to the end of a bouncy string, and it even has a ring for you to slip your finger into, making playtime more comfortable.

Our tester, Julie Johnson, loves this toy and praised its durability, saying it held up well after lots of play with her cats. Not only is it a great choice for interactive play, but surprisingly, it also works well for solo sessions. Julie hangs it over her cat tree, and her felines enjoy whacking it with their paws.

Since the string is a bit short, it limits the degree of bounce, so you might consider the Frisco Teaser Wand instead which offers a better range of motion. If you're wondering how the two compare, here's a quick breakdown:

The best cat toy for independent play

If your cat enjoys stalking and hunting their prey, they’re going to love this interactive toy by Pawaboo. It's automated and features a little mouse that runs around, popping in and out of the holes for your cat to swat and pounce on – you can even adjust the speed.

Our tester, Kathryn, was initially concerned that Roxy might get her paws stuck inside but was happy to see that it had a paw-friendly design, helping her feel more comfortable leaving her alone with it. She says it's great for independent play and keeps Roxy busy and engaged for about 10 minutes, encouraging her to release pent-up energy.

Kathryn recommends this toy for independent breeds with lower energy levels, and if your cat prefers to play with people, the Frisco Teaser Toy Wand might be a better option. She also notes that the movements can get a little repetitive after a while.

I’ve tested the Petchain Interactive Cat Toy, another mouse-style toy for cats to chase, but it doesn’t work well on carpets and sometimes gets stuck in corners or under furniture. That’s why I think the Pawaboo is the better choice for independent and automated play.

This might be the most expensive toy in the guide, costing around $30, but we think it's worth the money after giving it a go. However, if you want an automated toy that's a bit cheaper, you might want to opt for the Catit Groovy Fish instead which is around $12.

Nina Ottosson by Outward Hound Rainy Day Puzzle & Play Cat Toy | $19.99 at Amazon

You can't go wrong with a puzzle by Nina Ottosson; they're always entertaining, high-quality, durable, and made from food-safe materials. My cat, Nala, really enjoys playing with their Rainy Day toy, which is an excellent choice for advanced puzzle players like her. However, I found the Buggin' Out toy to be a better option for all abilities, as it's slightly easier to get the hang of.

Pioneer Pet Catnip Toy Nip Nibblers | $7.76 at Amazon

After speaking with certified cat behaviorist Joey Lasvardi, I learned that refillable catnip toys tend to last much longer, as catnip can lose its potency over time. While our tester Norah's cats had lots of fun with the Pioneer Pet Catnip Toy Nip Nibblers, I decided to replace it with the Caitit Groovy Fish which has the refillable pocket.

Planet Pleasures Spiral Cylinder with Catnip & Bell Cat Toy | $8.42 at Chew

Chilli and Nala loved playing with this toy for a month, but they got bored of it very quickly. The Catit Groovy Fish has held their attention for longer, thanks to its automated design and refillable catnip pocket.

This feather wand is a good way to keep your cat active, with feathers that mimic a bird and catnip to add excitement. Our tester Julie found that her cats enjoyed it, but she noted that it’s not very durable and “pretty easy for them to pull apart.” If you're looking for a sturdier teaser wand with a prey-style toy at the end, the SmartyKat Bouncy Mouse is a better choice – and you won’t have to keep such a close eye on playtime.

Before deciding on the best cat toys for your feline friend, you should assess your kitty's personality. How your cat interacts with toys and the environment will help to steer you towards more suitable products. Personality can also dictate the number of toys you need to buy to ensure a cat is suitably stimulated both mentally and physically.

“Cats that don’t have toys to display their inbuilt prey/play behaviors may start directing these behaviors on to people (particularly if owners encourage their cats with fingers or toes) and over time this can develop to be a substantial problem,” says Daniel Warren-Cummings, Cats Protection’s Central Behavior Officer.

“Frustration-related aggression or redirected play aggression can occur when cats are under-stimulated and need an outlet. If an owner’s cat is regularly displaying ‘zoomies’, then it’s a good indicator that they might be under-stimulated and need more toy play in their life.”

1. Watch your cat
By watching your cat and identifying certain behaviors, you can better target your toy buying. Filling the rest of their time can be tricky!,” says vet Dr. Joanna Woodnutt. “If your cat spends all their time indoors, consider using a puzzle feeder to help them keep those hunting instincts honed. Some puzzle feeders are designed to be hidden around the house so your cat has to hunt for his dinner!”

3. Feel free to experiment
Most cat toys are inexpensive so it's worth introducing a range of toys and seeing which ones your kitty takes to the most. You shouldn't give up quickly either. Cats are fickle creatures and while they may turn up their noses at a toy today, that doesn't mean they'll ignore it tomorrow. In some cases, cats can ignore toys for months and then suddenly fall in love with them.

4. Go for well-made toys
Finally, on a practical level, ensure the toys are robust, unlikely to fall apart under heavy play, and free of small pieces that could come away and be swallowed. As vet Dr. Joanna Woodnutt says: “A common danger is swallowed string from wand toys – if you allow your cat to ‘catch’ the toy, be sure to remove it before they chew through the elastic.”

Why does my cat not show an interest in toys?

There are many reasons why a cat may not show an interest in toys and much depends on the type of feline you have. Indoor cats often react in different ways to outdoor cats, for example. “Indoor cats need more entertainment than outdoor cats who will often engage in hunting activity or will play with fallen leaves or grass blowing in the wind,” confirms Daniel Warren-Cummings, Cats Protection’s Central Behavior Officer.

Sometimes a cat has the urge to do something but will find there is no way of expressing themselves. “Oftentimes a cat will want to play but does not have an appropriate outlet,” Warren-Cummings continues. “Some cats like to chase a feather fishing rod toy (not just have them dangled in their face), others prefer self-directed play with ping pong balls and others will prefer larger ‘kickeroo’ style toys to display more ‘bunny kicking’ behavior.”

Boredom with toys can also set in so it's your job to ensure they are entertained without being overstimulated. “It’s important to swap toys around regularly to keep them interesting and very short games of one to two minutes are fine,” Warren-Cummings adds. “And older cats will love playing three or four times a day, while younger cats will be happy to play 10 times a day or more.”

When it comes to catnip toys, some felines don’t react to them, so you might want to explore alternatives, like silvervine.

Why do cats put toys in water?

Every now and then, you may wander over to your cat's bowl and find a toy bobbing in the water. Sometimes, you may even find one in the toilet. But why? “The reason is unknown but there are a few theories,” says Daniel Warren-Cummings, Cats Protection’s Central Behavior Officer.

“Some cats may drop their toys into their water bowls in order to fish them out as their own form of playing. Other cats may have been reinforced for the behavior and thus it becomes a learned pattern. As long as the toy being in, or near, the bowl is not deterring the cat from drinking the water, there’s nothing to be concerned about and owners should just enjoy watching their weird and wonderful cats.”
