"It goes without saying that if your dog’s a chewer, you need a sturdy dog bed!," says Dr. Godfrey. "This means one made of sturdy material with hard-wearing seams so that your pooch can’t easily break through it to the stuffing inside. Tough materials like canvas and woven polyester are more durable, and double stitching provides added reinforcement.

Another thing to consider is the style of the bed – a dog bed with raised sides and a cushion in the center might be more appealing and exciting than a boring old gym mat or mattress style, which could mean your dog is more likely to chew.

Since mattress-style dog beds can still be very comfortable, this might be a good option if your dog likes to get stuck into removing the cushions, digging, or generally destroying their bed."

Why does my dog chew his bed?

Do dogs get bored? Absolutely! And it's one of the primary reasons they may resort to chewing.

"Dogs can chew their bed for lots of reasons," Dr. Godfrey says. "They might be bored and lacking physical or mental stimulation. They might have lots of energy and need to let off some steam."

In cases where a lack of stimulation might be causing your dog to chew, we recommend investing in some of the best dog puzzle toys to give your pup's brain a good workout.

However, boredom and a lack of exercise or mental enrichment aren't the only reasons a dog may chew, as Dr. Godfrey explains.

"They might be stressed, scared, in pain, or unwell. And don’t forget separation anxiety – which creates a mixture of boredom, stress, and anxiety and commonly leads to destructive behavior like chewing."

How can I stop my dog from chewing their bed?

"To stop your dog from chewing his bed, make sure you provide plenty of opportunities to burn off energy – walks and playtime are great ideas," Dr. Godfrey advises.

"On top of this, fight boredom with puzzles, toys, and long-lasting dog chews. Make sure you reward time spent chewing toys and chews, providing plenty of positive reinforcement, and avoid a big reaction if he does chew his bed – he’ll only learn that he gets your full attention when he does it."

As Dr Lily Richards explains, “the theory behind the calming beds is to lie the dog deep within the bed, surrounding them with comfort contributing to a feeling of security as they would have felt with their mother/ litter mates when young and simulating the “den environment” of mature dogs.”

Having an extra comfortable and stress-reducing environment to sleep in can also promote longer sleep and rest periods, which Dr Richards explains can have a positive effect on dogs who experience stress and anxiety.

On top of the physical and emotional comfort they offer, calming dog beds can also offer health benefits. “The bed design offers support for the dog's head, neck and back which is great for older dogs or those prone to orthopedic pain, joint, and muscle pain” states Dr Richards.

Do calming dog beds actually work?

OK, so we’ve covered what calming dog beds are, but do they actually work? We spoke to one of our expert vets, Dr. Hannah Godfrey, to get the lowdown on these specialized dog beds

“Calming dog beds are typically doughnut-shaped with raised sides to help surround your dog, making them feel safe and secure.” explains Dr. Hannah Godfrey. “Anxious or sensitive dogs will often prefer this bed design, because they feel more enclosed and protected, which in itself makes relaxing in the bed feel warm and comfortable.”

Calming dog beds aren’t a magic fix though, and while they offer a lot of comfort to stressed dogs, they only work if you can convince your furry friend to use them. “While a calming dog bed will help your dog feel more relaxed when they’re sleeping or relaxing, getting them to use the bed during a stressful event might not be so easy,” says Dr Godfrey.

It’s important to combine calming dog beds with other products, such as the best calming dog treats, and training to ensure that your pooch knows how to respond when something stressful is happening. As Dr Godfrey puts it, “If your dog is anxious during fireworks, they might run around frantically, pace, or bark, if you haven’t prepared for the situation by creating a safe space for them, using sound desensitization methods in the months prior, and using calming sprays or diffusers.”

Figure out what situations cause your dog stress and work with them to alleviate those issues. Some dogs hate fireworks, others find meeting new people stressful and some suffer from separation anxiety. Whatever their triggers, be sure to encourage them to use their calming bed rather than just hoping they figure it out on their own.

Before you snag the first bed they can fit in, it's worth considering a few things. Just remember, the most important thing is finding the bed your dog will use, and that can fit into your budget.

Getting the right size is also super important. You need something that will fit in your space while also making sure it's big enough for your dog to stretch out on without overhanging the edge.

Do large dogs need their own bed?

Larger dogs are at a higher risk of mobility and joint problems like arthritis, or hip dysplasia, and because of this we definitely recommend they have their own bed. A large dog bed helps to take pressure off aching joints, and evenly distribute their weight when resting or hanging out.

Beyond that, large dogs are... well large, and they take up more space. This means that unless you get a truly massive dog bed, there won't be enough room for them to share with other dogs easily.

What type of bed is best for a large dog?

"Large breed dogs need a large bed!" Dr Godfrey. It might seem obvious, but bigger pooches need more room to be able to lounge around. "However, traditional, softer dog beds make it hard for your dog to cool down in warmer weather, and many don't provide enough support for a heavy dog.

If you have a particularly boisterous pup then Dr Godfrey recommends you avoid traditional beds until they mature. She explains that "they're also full of padding, and many dogs make it their mission to destroy their bed by chewing it and removing the stuffing, which can cause a gut blockage. So, a well-ventilated raised bed could be a better option for large dogs because they provide support without any stuffing to chew!"

Are raised beds good for large dogs?

"Raised beds are great for large breed dogs because they provide all-over support for their muscles and joints, just like a good human mattress does." explains Dr Godfrey. "Your large-breed dog can rest comfortably on a raised bed without aches and pains from the pressure points contacting the ground. This is especially important for dogs with arthritis and joint pain."

How to choose the best dog bed?

Your dog's personality will play a part here. Does your four-legged friend like feeling secure? If so, a bed that is covered and shaped like a dome will help to give them the security they need for a good sleep. In contrast, some dogs will like the freedom to stretch out, in which case a rectangular pillow bed will be likely to do the job.

Size and age can factor in too. Smaller dogs that like curling up will be suited to round or oval-shaped options, while larger and senior dogs will appreciate the support of an orthopedic bed, which prioritizes cushioning and joint support.

Then there are bolster beds - available in a variety of styles, these are well suited to pups who like resting their chin on the bolster but will be less suited to dogs who wouldn't like feeling hemmed in.

Do dogs prefer hard or soft beds?

Only your dog can definitively answer this question but dog owners can get an indication of their preferences by seeing where their four-legged friend currently curls up. If you find your dog is generally lying on the floor, it points to a preference for a harder bed, while sleeping on the sofa suggests a more comfortable sleep setup will be preferred.

Age can also play a part. Speaking from personal experience, my dog (a 14-year-old cockalier) has changed his habits as he’s got older. When he was younger, he preferred a harder bed and enjoyed resting on the floor. In more recent years, he’s liked the comfort of the sofa, so I bought a softer bed for him, which he loves curling up in, especially at night.

How big should a dog bed be?

Dog beds come in a variety of sizes, catering to the differing requirements that each breed will have. Certain aspects are obvious – for example, a smaller dog will require a smaller bed – but you also need to consider your dog's sleeping style.

Dr. Hannah Godfrey advises to “measure them from their nose to their tail, then their shoulder width, to give you an idea of the absolute minimum size. However, your dog will likely choose to lie down and spread out sometimes, so it’s best to make sure they have enough room for this.”

Godfrey added, “don’t go overboard – some dogs like the security and coziness of a bed that’s not too roomy, but you can always add a blanket or a cushion or two (if they’re not likely to chew them!) to help with this.”

Do dogs prefer round or rectangular beds?

This is another question best answered by observing your dog's habits. Round or oval-shaped beds are better suited to dogs who like curling up into a ball but will be less ideal for bigger breeds who need support for their joints or dogs who like stretching out.

In contrast, a rectangular dog bed, typically in the shape of a pillow bed, will be better for dogs who like stretching out more and are likely to change their position in their sleep.

Do dogs prefer raised beds?

“Raised dog beds offer health benefits as well as being optimal for comfort. All dogs, young and old, seem to prefer a raised bed to a standard floor bed if given the choice.” states veterinary surgeon Dr Lily Richards.

It’s for this reason that raised dog beds are favored by dog trainers, as well as many dog-owning homes, over traditional dog beds.

“Raised beds offer even pressure-relieving comfort which is good for older dogs, particularly those suffering from arthritis or dogs with orthopedic complaints.” says Dr Richards, though she’s keen to point out that “All ages of dogs appreciate an increased level of comfort from these types of beds.”

There are other benefits beyond comfort though. “Raised beds keep dogs up off the floor, which is advantageous in wet weather, keeping dogs off a muddy, cold floor but also allows for better air circulation than standard floor beds, helping dogs keep cool on a hot day.” explains Dr Richards.

Raised dog beds are also more hygienic too. It’s easier to clean under and around the dog bed due to the elevation, and the raised position also means that there is more airflow to keep dust and grime from building up. They can also help your pup stay cooler during the warmer weather, as the lack of padding can offer better ventilation.

Finally, raised dog beds are typically formed from a taught material stretched over a frame rather than a stuffed mattress. This means there is no stuffing for your dog to chew on and swallow if they decide to have a nibble on their mattress, letting you avoid a trip to the vet thanks to foreign body blockage in their digestive tract.

What’s more, heated pet beds can sometimes be dangerous, with risks of burns, overheating, or even electrocution, depending on the heating method."

Can pets overheat in heated pet beds and heated blankets?

It's unlikely your pet will overheat in one of these beds as they can simply move to a cooler spot if they feel too warm, assures Dr. Godrey.

She adds: "However, those who are unwell, weak, or have mobility problems may struggle to move away from the heat source, and these are at risk of overheating."

Throughout the coronavirus lockdown, Built & Spaces said they saw a surge in people wanting home extensions such as offices, annexes and garden extensions to create more space while working from home, and it seems that many didn’t want to leave their pet out of the equation.
