Basic isn’t always a bad thing – I’ve tested a range of pet fountains, and this is by far the easiest to use. You don’t need to remember to charge a battery or figure out complicated settings – simply plug it in and go.

3. You can monitor your cat's water intake
A cat not drinking could be a sign of a health condition that needs your attention, so we always recommend keeping an eye on their intake regularly. I've tested fountains that send a notification to your phone whenever your cat drinks, but this one relies on a good old-fashioned window you can track by eye – saving you from taking off the lid each time or getting constant messages.

4. It holds a good amount of water
Containing up to 90 oz of water (more than the average cat fountain), you won't need to constantly top it up. And since it holds that little bit extra, it can also be used for small dogs (though it's important to give them their own separate bowls if you live in a multi-pet household).

The design might be basic, but that's what makes it incredibly user-friendly. I've tested fountains that need charging regularly or that randomly stop working because of a technical issue, but that's not something I need to worry about with this fountain.

Unlike my cats' traditional bowl that quickly builds up debris and grime, this provides them with fresh, filtered water that's probably a lot more appetizing to them – and better for their health!

The biggest downside of this device is that it's corded, which doesn't look as sleek in your home and makes it more of a faff to move around if needed. Since it holds more water than other cat fountains, it also comes with a bigger size, which looks a bit clunkier than other models I've tested.

While it doesn't look as easy on the eye, it saves me from having to remember to charge it and means my cats constantly have fresh water, instead of waiting for it to be fully charged again. The larger size also means I don't have to top it up as often and makes it suitable for small dogs too.

If you compare this fountain to similar models on the market (like this one from Amazon, which costs under $40), it does seem a tad overpriced at $80, especially given that it doesn’t have any fancy features and is made from plastic.

What's good about the Yeedi S14 Plus Robot Vacuum and Mop

I’ve tested some of the best vacuum cleaners for pet hair on the market – here’s everything I liked about the Yeedi S14 Plus.

1. It saves me time
I could definitely clean the house a lot quicker than this vacuum, but I love that I can get on with other things at the same time – and when I'm finished, I come back to squeaky clean floors (without any effort).

You don't even need to be in the same room to program a clean, as everything can be controlled via the app – including suction power, water output, and returning to the station. Instead of spending my Saturday mornings blitzing the house, I can now lie in bed, press a button, and know the job is being handled while I snooze.

2. It cleans well
How often do you clean underneath your surfaces and cabinets? For me, this level of cleaning happens once in a blue moon, so I was thrilled when I saw the vacuum hard at work underneath my furniture, getting into all those places I usually avoid.

Since the vacuum has a circular shape, I was skeptical that it would clean in the corners – but to my delight, it features a side brush that gets into every cavity and is really helpful when cleaning around things like chair legs.

You can choose between a range of vacuum and mop settings, but I like to use the most powerful suction and highest water output for the deepest clean, and I've been pleased with the results so far. I've run a couple of tests (plain flour on my vinyl flooring and pet hair on my carpet), and it picked up both perfectly. Since it has anti-tangle technology, it shouldn't wrap hair or fur around the bristles either (but time will tell if that holds true).

However, there was one sticky mark it failed to clean, which I only managed to lift by scrubbing violently with a wet cloth.

3. It avoids obstacles (and pets!)
Before I used the Yeedi S14 Plus, I pictured it crashing into my furniture and cats, creating more mess than it cleaned. So, I was relieved to see it dodge obstacles and turn in the other direction – which makes me feel comfortable leaving my pets alone in the same room with it.

As well as avoiding stationary objects, it can also detect real-time movement – like people walking past or doors closing – and will change its route to move out of the way.

Once, it got caught on my front door mat, but it recovered quickly without me having to intervene.

I hate reading instructions more than anyone, but I found it relatively simple to set up the Yeedi S14 Plus and would rate the process about an 8/10. The device comes with a handy instruction card, a user manual, and easy-to-follow guidance once you've logged into the app.

The vacuum can be controlled via buttons, voice commands, or the app, giving you plenty of flexibility depending on your preference.

Once you've plugged it in and connected it to Wi-Fi and the app, the device creates a map of the rooms in your home so it knows where to clean. It's a little tricky to figure out which room is which at first, but once you get the hang of it, you can assign floor types to each room so it cleans accordingly.

Despite the docking station being fairly large, it blends in surprisingly well with my home. It has a modern design that looks discreet and stylish – I’ve even put a plant pot on top of mine! Why we love the Petcube Cam 360

If you're looking to invest in one of the best pet cameras, the Petcube Cam 360 is a solid choice. After weeks of testing, here's everything I like about it:

1. No blind spots:
Thanks to the 360-degree panning feature, this camera doesn't have any blind spots (unlike other security cams I've tested in the past). You can control where the camera moves from an app on your phone, panning left, right, up, and down, as well as zooming in up to eight times. This let me follow my cats around the room and see what they were getting up to when I wasn't there.

2. Easy set-up:
This was one of the easiest cameras I've ever tested, and I had it working in under five minutes. If you're a beginner (or can't be bothered to read pages of instructions, like me), this is the model for you.

3. Two-way talk:
While most pet cameras offer two-way talk (a microphone and speaker that let you talk to and hear your animal), it's still a handy feature regardless. It would be especially useful for dog owners (particularly if they're in the middle of reactivity training), as it lets you check in and reassure them if they're feeling distressed.

4. Motion and sound alerts:
It might be tempting to watch what your pets are doing all day on your phone, but that wouldn't be very productive! Thankfully, this camera has motion and sound alerts, so you can stay updated if something actually happens. You will need to subscribe to a paid plan to access this feature, though.

I was disappointed that the camera has a corded design, as it looks less attractive than other models I've tested, like the battery-powered Toucan S4. However, it was easier than I thought to blend it in with my furniture, thanks to its small, compact size, and the lead tucks neatly down the side of my cabinet.

The camera comes in one color (white with a black square section around the lens), but it doesn't look offensive, and I'm happy to have it up on the shelf.

Petcube Cam 360 value for money

This camera is pretty good value for money, costing under $47 despite having a bunch of high-tech features, like 360-degree panning, security alerts, and night vision. It's also available as a two-pack, which works out at around $41 per device.

However, I have spotted cheaper versions with pretty similar functionalities – like this one from Amazon for under $20, with nearly 7,000 five-star reviews. It doesn't have sound alerts or a vet chat line like the Petcube Cam 360, but that might be worth sacrificing if you want to save money.

There are all sorts of useful pet products on the market, allowing us to keep an eye on our furry friends when we’re out of the house, providing them with lots of physical and mental stimulation, and making our lives easier.

But moving beyond the current best pet cameras and the best automatic litter boxes, what sort of products would you like to see produced in the future? Pet Drugs Online, one of the UK’s largest suppliers of veterinary medication online and animal care products, spoke to 2,000 pet parents based in the country to find out just what our hopes are for pet products going forward over the next 20 years.

In the not-so-distant past, this would have sounded like something from a sci-fi movie, but a huge 40% of pet parents are hoping for technology that translates barks and meows – who needs Dr Dolittle?

If pet parents could ask their cat or dog one thing, 20% would like to ask about their physical health, while 17% would check in about their happiness.

Surveyed pet owners reported that they hoped for:

• devices that automatically pick up poop (34%)
• technology that can help reduce a pet’s anxiety (29%)
• pet beds that change temperature based on how their pet feels (26%)
• smart home appliances controlled by barks and meows (14%)
• AI animals to be a ‘friend’ to their pet (13%)
• public transport purely for pets and owners (13%)

Sarah Page-Jones, head of veterinary compliance at Pet Drugs Online, said: “This research paints an exciting picture of the future of pet care. We've come a long way already, with tech inventions such as automatic feeders, cameras and DNA testing kits, but there are still so many opportunities.”

She added: “With the busy lives pet owners now lead, cameras are great to keep an eye on what pets are up to, but we’re surely not far off seeing AI pet-sitters! It’s clear pet owners are eager for even more innovation, especially when it comes to the health of their pets and everyday convenience.

“We know that the focuses we have on human health always trickle down to the priorities pet owners have for their companions, seen through food and nutritional demand over the past decade. Looking ahead, pets’ mental health will likely become more important to owners, as it has for humans in recent years.”

The PetPivot Autoscooper 11 is one of the best automatic cat litter boxes I've tested – here's everything I liked about it:

1. It scoops your cat's poop for you
If there's one thing all cat owners can agree on, it's that cleaning out the litter box is the worst chore in the world. I love that the Autoscooper 11 takes care of this dreaded task at the click of a button – all I have to do is tie up and dispose of the bag after five to ten days.

2. It's simple
Yes, this litter box is pretty basic in terms of functions, but sometimes less is more – it was ten times easier to set up than other automatic boxes I’ve tested.

3. It reduces litter tracking
The box comes with a handy rubber mat that catches litter from your cat's paws before it touches the floor – and this has significantly reduced litter tracking in my bathroom. Of course, you don't have to buy a whole new litter box for this (you can buy these mats on Amazon for under $20), but I like how it's included.

4. It works well for anxious cats
One of my cats suffers from anxiety, so I was skeptical that he’d even want to use this thing. Thankfully, the box has two modes: automatic (it cleans itself after detecting the cat has left) and manual (you press a button when you want it to clean). The latter is less intimidating for easily frightened cats, as they don’t have to see or hear the cleaning in action.

In comparison to other automatic litter boxes that require a Wi-Fi connection and app installation, the Autoscooper is fuss-free to set up – and you don't have to be a tech genius to get it working. Simply plug it into the wall, press a few buttons, and you're good to go!

While I did find it a little tricky to screw the legs onto the base, and was initially confused about how to get the dirty litter to fall into the waste bag, the video tutorial came to the rescue in the end.

When I previously tested Whisker's Litter-Robot 3, I was quite shocked at the size and a bit disappointed by how much space it took up. So, I was very happy to discover that the Autoscooper is a lot smaller and doesn't look much clunkier than your standard litter box (just higher up, obviously).

The box is made from plastic, and while it isn't particularly attractive, it's not a total eyesore either, and it comes in five colors: white, white/beige, white/grey, white/pink, and grey.

I keep my litter box in the bathroom, and since the plug socket is high up on the wall, it made things slightly tricky when it came to plugging it in. For this reason, I wish the cord were longer, but you could solve the problem by using an extension lead.

Automatic litter boxes typically range from around $165 to $900, so the Autoscooper is priced quite reasonably at $300 (and I’ve seen it on sale a couple of times for under $180).

While it doesn’t offer app control or health monitoring like those premium models do, I don’t feel like I’m missing out by not having them. If you’re looking for something more affordable – and just want to avoid scooping poop – this is a great choice that won’t completely break the bank.

It might not have any fancy features or a particularly attractive appearance, but Petpivot's Autoscooper 11 is a brilliant entry-level automatic litter box that's simple to use and has saved me so much time. If you want to upgrade your cat's box but don't want to spend an absolute fortune, this is a great middle ground to go for.

Amazon Prime Day is back, and I've just spotted the Petcube Cam 360 for under $65 for a two-pack (for reference, these should be $53 each!). So, you'll be getting another one for just $12.

The best pet cameras are a worthy investment if you work from the office, go on vacation, or even just need to pop to the shops, as you'll be able to check whether your animal is doing OK. Our in-house vet, Dr Rebecca MacMillan, says they can be particularly helpful for monitoring training progression and separation anxiety.

I've been testing this camera for the last couple of weeks, and I think it's a brilliant budget-friendly option that ticks all the boxes I'd need. My favorite thing is the 360-panning feature that lets you look around the whole room from your phone.

It also has a speaker and microphone, allowing you to talk to and hear your pet from anywhere in the world. While it doesn't offer treat-dispensing features (like this one from Amazon does), it does everything I need to keep an eye on my cats.

As a pet writer, I've tested countless tech products like this and am often left frustrated by complicated instructions and fiddly apps. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy this was to connect to the app – and even happier that you don't need to pay for a subscription to view or download footage.

If you pay a little extra, you can sign up for motion and sound detection alerts for added peace of mind, as well as extended video history and a two-year warranty. However, you can definitely get by without it – and I don’t have any plans to upgrade.

The 1080p resolution isn’t outstanding, but it does the job for a standard pet cam, letting you see everything you need clearly. It also has night vision, making it great for round-the-clock security.

While this wouldn’t be my first pick for pet cameras on any other day, the Amazon Prime Day deal changes my mind – it’s incredible value for money, working out to just $32.50 per camera.

Have you ever used a pet camera? Many pet parents use them to keep an eye on their animals when they’re out of the house – whether that’s for a couple of hours or a few days – and they can even double up as security cameras to make sure there aren’t any intruders.

There are so many popular options on the market, but until recently, I’d never used one myself. While I always thought they looked interesting, I wasn’t sure whether we really needed one. Growing up, my family had various cats and other pets – hamsters, fish, a rabbit, a dog – and we never used one.

However, my partner and I decided to give one of the best pet cameras a try to see if they’re worth it, and to find out what our cats, Bunny and Dougie, might think. I also reached out to Dr Rebecca MacMillan to find out more about the pros and cons of pet cameras and looked at how to choose the right device.

My experience using a pet camera

We were curious to see what the cats might get up to when we weren’t there, so we thought we’d try a pet camera. I wasn’t sure how useful I’d find it, given that they’re both indoor cats and we live in an apartment, but I was excited to see how things would go.

I used the IMOU Rex 3D which has a range of features – including night vision, motion detection, two-way talk, and a 360-degree view – because I felt it seemed like a good all-rounder. Setting it up involved downloading the IMOU app, which has an accessible interface, and it was easy to find the main functions – like the microphone.

It was fun to see what the cats got up to while we were out in the evening, and I also caught myself checking it while working in our home office to see what they were doing in the living room from my chair, just because I could.

They didn’t really seem to notice the camera much – or if they did, they didn’t acknowledge it. Instead, they carried on with their days as normal. Overall, I feel like it’s a useful tool and definitely worth the initial expense.

Pros of using a pet camera

There are lots of benefits to using a pet camera. The obvious one is that they let you check in on your pet while you’re away, so you can see what your animals get up to when they’re unsupervised . Are there any signs of separation anxiety, perhaps, or do your pets not get on as well as you expected when no humans are at home?

It can be fun to take a look at what your pets get up to, too. Maybe you’ll see them playing or being a little bit naughty – are they doing something they know they’re not supposed to?

“A pet camera also gives some owners a bit of peace of mind, especially if their pet suffers from a health condition like epilepsy or cardiac disease,” says Dr. MacMillan.

She also points out that these cameras let you ensure any caregivers, such as pet sitters or dog walkers, have been there as planned. Just make sure they know you’re using a camera and that they consent to it before you head away.

You can also use a pet camera as a security camera, so you can keep an eye out for unwelcome intruders.

Cons of using a pet camera

Pet cameras are great tools in a lot of ways, but there are some potential downsides.

“The main disadvantage of pet cameras is that some people can become a bit obsessive, checking on their pet every five minutes,” says Dr. MacMillan. “This can be quite distracting if you are supposed to be concentrating at work or another engagement.”

Checking in every so often is no bad thing, but if it starts to impact your productivity or focus at work, or you’re struggling to enjoy a meal out or your child’s soccer game because you keep going on to the camera’s app on your phone, there might be an issue.

While it’s important not to check the camera all the time, on the other side of the coin, we shouldn’t use pet cameras as a substitute for interaction.

“Some clever cameras can dispense treats (like this one from Amazon) and allow you to talk to your pet, but you must not become too overly reliant on these functions,” says Dr MacMillan. “These are not a good replacement for real human companionship.”

Just because pet cameras allow you to speak to your pet remotely, you shouldn’t be leaving them at home for longer. For many pets, hearing your voice but not being able to see or smell you can actually be stressful – they don’t have the same understanding of pet tech as we do.

How to choose a pet camera

There are a lot of pet cameras on the market, so how do you choose one?

Video quality is important for many pet parents, so a higher-resolution camera might be desirable. Resolution refers to how many pixels make up the image, with higher resolution meaning more pixels, and a clearer, sharper, image. 1080p, also known as Full HD, will probably be the minimum for most pet parents. However, 2.5k (Quad HD) and 4k (Ultra HD) will be clearer and sharper still.

Some cameras have night vision capabilities, too (like this one from Amazon). If you often go out in the evenings or you’d like to learn more about your pet’s sleep patterns when you’re not there, this could be something you prioritize when shopping around.

Then, consider what field of view you’d like. Wide-angle pet cameras have lenses that cover a larger area of view, while many pet cameras offer panning and tilting options, where they rotate horizontally and vertically respectively. These allow you to see all around the room, and many will move as they detect movement, allowing you to follow your pet as they move around.

Other things to consider include the camera’s storage capabilities and its motion detection abilities, while many require you to download an app onto your smartphone – you might want to look online to find out more about the apps and how to use them.

Many cameras are wireless, while others need to be connected to a power source. Likewise, most cameras use Wi-Fi, but some also work connected to your router directly via an ethernet cable. Think about where your router and your plug sockets are, and where you’d like to place the camera, to help you decide on the best one for you.

Then, it’s time to look at the additional features. Do you want a camera that allows you to talk to your pet? How about one that has the ability to dispense treats for your dog or is equipped with a laser for playtime with your cat (like this one from Amazon)?

Buying the right pet camera might feel daunting, but they’re a sound investment if you’d like to keep an eye on your pets when you’re not there. Just be mindful not to check it obsessively to the detriment of your own life, and don’t use it as a substitute for actually spending quality time with your furry friends, and you’re unlikely to go far wrong.

There are so many things to love about this GPS, but my favorite feature is the real-time tracking, which lets you watch your cat move around via an app. Cats are mysterious creatures, so it’s always interesting to see what they get up to when you’re not around – out of pure curiosity as well as safety concerns!

I was relieved to discover that Chilli only ventures up the road and back, with the occasional sniff around the neighbor’s garden. He’s gone missing for days before, and it turned out he was trapped in the house next door — if only I’d had this then!

Not only can you track your cat’s location, but the device also gives you interesting insights into their activity and sleep, flagging any potential health concerns. While I’d always take this sort of thing with a pinch of salt, it’s great to have a rough idea of their welfare – especially if I’m already feeling worried.

The tracker comes with a quick-release collar, and attaching the device is really straightforward. Chilli wasn’t too happy about it at first, but he soon got used to it and didn’t show any signs of discomfort.

My only gripe is that you have to pay a monthly subscription, but thankfully, you can pause or cancel it at any time. I’ve currently paused my membership and plan to reactivate it when I go on vacation or won’t be in the house all day (and I can confirm they don’t charge you while it’s paused).

If you're a pet parent who loves a clean house (and is tired of dealing with endless fur everywhere), I highly recommend the Neakasa P2 Pro Grooming Kit, which is 38% off right now.

But could we see robot pets become more popular, even potentially replacing our familiar furry friends? They’re sometimes used in settings with elderly people dealing with loneliness, isolation or dementia, or with children who are learning how to take care of a pet. A new podcast from UK animal charity the RSPCA, Animal Futures, looks at the future of animal welfare with robot pets one area explored. In the first episode, journalist and RSPCA ambassador Kate Quilton speaks to Ted Fischer, the CEO and founder of Ageless Innovation, and Dr. Leanne Proops, an animal behavior specialist at the University of Portsmouth.

They discuss how robot pets can ease dementia symptoms, tackle loneliness and isolation, and play a role in therapy – as well as whether they could help improve animal welfare and play a bigger role in society as technology marches on.

Fischer explains how his company developed dogs, cats and birds that purr and paw, have realistic heartbeats, and verbally communicate back to their humans – and that some people have even been buried with their robot pets, such is their bond. We know there are so many ways having a pet changes your life, but are robot pets really the same?

For residents in three Washington, DC wards aged 60 and over, they certainly seem to be having a positive effect.

Dr. Proops, meanwhile, describes her research with children, in which she decided to see whether they’d prefer a robot pet or a real one. We know there are so many ways pets are in an important part of life, but are robot pets really the same?

Gemma Hope, RSPCA Assistant Director of Policy, Advocacy and Evidence, said, “Robot pets is a really fascinating topic. While many of us at the RSPCA and our supporters couldn’t imagine replacing our much-loved pets with a robot, our research shows more than one in four (26%) would consider it.

“In this episode, we hear how in some settings, like care homes or therapy, robot pets are bringing amazing benefits. But as more robot pets are coming on the market this year, and with AI likely to make them more realistic, we are also exploring what impact this could have on our relationship with animals – both good and bad.”

Why we love the Enabot ROLA PetPal

The Enabot ROLA PetPal is one of the best pet cameras we've ever tested (and the first one that doubles up as a toy!) Here's everything I love about it:

1. The remote-control steering

Perhaps the biggest selling point of this robot is the remote steering, which you can control through an app on your phone. It features a 360-degree joystick, a speed adjuster, and the ability to program it to move in specific patterns, like a figure eight or a circle.

2. The camera

Obviously, the 2.5K resolution isn't as impressive as the iPhone cameras we're all used to, but it's very good for a pet camera and a lot better than the average one, which has a resolution of 1080p. It picks up all the details you need, and after months of testing, I haven't experienced any delays or issues.

The camera is positioned at the same level as your pet, allowing you to observe their reactions. It’s so much fun to see what they get up to, and the 135-degree lens provides a great view of the surroundings.

You can replay footage and save it to your device, but keep in mind that saving to the app's Cloud storage requires a subscription plan, starting at $6 per month. That said, you can definitely get by without it.

3. The two-way audio

The two-way audio is another fun feature that lets you talk to your pet from another room or play pre-recorded sounds. It's also handy for those lazy moments when you need something from the other room!

4. The AI features

One of the coolest features of this device is its ability to recognize your pet and dispense treats specifically for them (you can buy the attachment on Amazon).

It can record videos of your pet throughout the day and edit them into a 'day in their life-style movie, which is then sent to your phone (with a subscription). There's also a smart reminder page, where you can set alerts for everything from deworming your pet to waking up in the morning (see second photo in gallery).

Additionally, the PetPal slows down when it detects an object in its path and alerts you to any unusual activity in your home that could pose a security concern.

5. The treat dispenser

I initially thought the treat dispenser would be tricky to set up, but to my surprise, it was incredibly easy and up and running within minutes. This feature is especially handy if you’re out of the house and want to give your pet a snack, though it’s a shame the attachment costs an additional $49.

Enabot ROLA PetPal Set-up

Setting up the Enabot ROLA PetPal was pretty easy – even for someone like me who hates reading instructions! I got it working in about 10 minutes and found lots of helpful videos online to guide me through.

At times, it takes a little while for the device to connect to the app, and I need to manually switch the robot on and off again, but this could be a Wi-Fi issue on my end. However, this would defeat the object if you're on vacation and can't physically do anything.

Enabot ROLA PetPal: Value for money

While $229 is a lot of money, this is not your standard security camera, and there are very few products like it on the market. Its competitor, the Rocki Robot, costs $20 less but doesn’t offer as good a camera. Enabot also has a more affordable mini robot for $149, but for the sake of $80, I think it’s worth paying a bit more to get all the cool features.

Yes, you can grab a 2K resolution security camera for under $100 (like this one we also tested from Amazon), but it doesn't have the remote control element.

My only hunch with the PetPal is that you have to pay extra for the treat dispenser and toy attachments, which I think should be included in this price.

Enabot ROLA PetPal: Design

The design is sturdy and I have every confidence that it wouldn't topple over if a pet wanted to play with it, but it's easy enough for a human to pick up and move around if needed. Steering takes a bit of getting used to, but this is probably due to my poor coordination more than anything else.

The app interface is user-friendly, and you can rotate your screen to landscape mode for a larger view of your pet. I think most people would find it easy to get the hang of, and there aren't too many buttons to get confused about.

This is more of a personal preference, but I don't love the charging dock and would much rather a plug-in lead. However, the auto self-charge feature is pretty convenient and saves you from having to remember to plug it in.

Enabot ROLA PetPal: Verdict

The Enabot ROLA PetPal is a great way to get up close and personal with your pets and check in on what they’re doing remotely throughout the day. I’ve had a lot of fun trying out this robot, and seeing my cat’s reaction on the camera has been hilarious and priceless – especially when I used the two-way talk feature!

I think the treat dispenser attachment is incredibly useful, but it’s a shame you have to pay extra for it when the device is already quite expensive. I also think the subscription-blocked features should be free, but that being said, you definitely don't need them.

As a pet owner, I feel like I am constantly keeping on top of hair in my house despite having a Shark vacuum with pet features. It’s one of the best vacuums for pet hair, but I wouldn’t be without this simple pet hair removal tool when it comes to the carpet.

Of course, my tiny tool wouldn’t be practical to use on a fully carpeted room, but I find it invaluable for the stairs, the small landing area, and the rug in my living room. The ‘scrapping’ makes it sound like a harsh tool, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it didn’t damage the carpet fibres and was not sharp to touch.

WHAT'S GOOD: My favorite thing about this pet tracker? It’s 100% subscription-free, so you don’t have to worry about pesky payments coming out of your account each month. I’ve trolled through pages and pages of trackers, and it’s very rare to find one that doesn’t require this commitment.

We gave this to Sophie Cheeseman, art editor at our sister publication Horse and Hound, to try out on her whippets, Frank and Bluebell. After losing Frank on a walk during testing, she was relieved that she could track him to a specific point on a road and call a family member to retrieve him, saving a lot of stress. Sophie praised its accuracy and says it shows you exactly where your dog is.

This tracker is the lightest model we’ve tested, weighing just 0.37 oz – similar to two sheets of printer paper – and it easily attaches to your dog’s collar without them even noticing. You won’t need to worry about it falling off either; the straps use parachute-grade Velcro, which Sophie says is “strong” and “fits neatly.”

Perfect for adventures, the device has an IP67 waterproof rating, meaning it can withstand swimming, diving, hydrotherapy, and watersports – you name it! Frank and Bluebell went for a 30-minute dip in meter-high water, and Sophie confirmed it worked perfectly fine afterward. You can also monitor your pet’s activity, including how far they walk, play, and rest, as well as feeding recommendations based on their weight and activity levels.

Pet trackers might seem a little daunting to set up, but Sophie reassures that the instructions were clear to follow and the device is easy to use – it even notifies you when the battery is getting low.

WHAT'S NOT SO GOOD: This might be the most expensive option in the guide, costing $199.99 (or £169.99), but it’s well worth the cost considering you don’t have to fork out each month for a subscription.

However, if you’re not quite ready for such a big lump sum, PitPat also offers a subscription-based model to UK customers for £12 a month, with the tracker coming free.

Sophie says that the tracker does take a few minutes to locate the dog, but once it’s up and running, it offers excellent accuracy on their whereabouts. It’s also worth noting that you won’t be able to track your dog if they go underground or indoors – it’s mainly built for outdoor use.

While we’re yet to find a model that works underground, the Tractive GPS Dog XL Tracker and Weenect Dog GPS Tracker can be used inside (though they might not be as accurate).

Best GPS tracker for cats

WHAT'S GOOD: Tractive's Cat Mini lets you monitor your feline's location from anywhere in the world, offering an unlimited tracking range and live updates. PetsRadar editor Georgia Guerin and I have both tested this little gadget on our cats and were seriously impressed with how easy it was to install – I had it up and running in around five minutes.

I've always been curious about where my cats go every day, so I've had so much fun tracking their whereabouts using the app – you can see them moving in real time on a map, which is fascinating to watch. As well as keeping tabs on their live location, you can also get an understanding of how far they roam, thanks to the territory feature that lets you see previous routes and their favorite spots to hang out in.

If you're concerned about your cat venturing too far, you can set up a virtual fence, and if they cross that boundary, you'll be alerted instantly and able to watch where they go next. The tracker also gives you useful insights into your cat's activity levels, including how long they slept and exercised each day, which can tell you a lot about their health. It alerts you to any unusual changes, which could potentially help spot concerns early.

One of my favorite things about this tracker is that your cat will be added to a leaderboard, where cats wearing the Tractive tracker compete based on how much activity they’ve done. You can add a name and profile picture for your pet, and it’s interesting to see what’s normal.

WHAT'S NOT SO GOOD: Since the tracker is fitted with a built-in SIM card, you’ll need to pay a monthly subscription fee to cover those costs, which starts from $5/month (or £4.50/month) for the basic plan. If you want to access family sharing, 365-day location history, and worldwide coverage, you'll need to upgrade to the premium option. However, this can be paused at any time (and I can confirm they won't charge you!)

Once my cat had gotten used to the tracker on his collar, he didn't show any signs of discomfort. However, it does look a little bit bulky, so it's not something I would choose to keep on him 24/7 – I personally only use it when I'm feeling curious or when I go on vacation.

Georgia also noted that, in comparison to the Weenect Cat GPS Tracker, it didn't stay on her cat's collar quite as well. However, I didn't experience a problem with it falling off, so it might be a personal thing depending on what your cat gets up to.

Best GPS tracker for cats who like to remove their collar

WHAT'S GOOD: Does your cat have a tendency to remove their collar? If the answer is yes, I'd recommend choosing the Weenect Cat GPS Tracker, which was tested and approved by Georgia.

She was impressed with how well this tracker stayed on her cat's collar compared to the Tractive Cat Mini, which she also tested. It features a secure buckle to keep it in place, along with a curved design that prevents it from getting caught on trees and branches – helping to keep your cat safe.

Once you've attached it to your cat, you'll be able to track their live location from anywhere in the world, with GPS updates every second and an unlimited range. If you want to see what your cat has been up to in the past, you can view their route history and discover which territories they spend the most time in.

The tracker also includes a recall feature, where you can train your cat to come back when it rings and vibrates – whether that’s for mealtimes or out of worry. You can also monitor their activity, which helps you keep an eye on their health and fitness and could be life-saving if it detects early signs of illness.

Battery life is around two to three days when left on 24/7 without using Wi-Fi zones, but it can last longer if you do. This tracker is small and lightweight, weighing just under an ounce – in fact, Georgia’s cat didn’t even notice it was on!

The tracker comes with a collar to attach it to, and there's a built-in light too, making it easier to find your cat when it gets dark outside.

WHAT'S NOT SO GOOD: This tracker might be moderately priced upfront, but it's worth bearing in mind that you'll have to pay a monthly subscription fee, starting from $5.56/month (£4.16/month) in the UK.

This tracker is still impressively small, but if you're looking for the tiniest option possible, go for the Tractive Cat Mini instead.

Best GPS tracker for large dogs

WHAT'S GOOD: If you have a large dog, I'd recommend choosing the Tractive GPS Dog XL Tracker, which is made specifically for pups over 50 lbs with an extra-strong, bite-proof design.

It offers GPS tracking with an unlimited range, helping you keep a close eye on your dog's whereabouts from anywhere in the world. For dogs that are prone to escaping, you can set up a virtual fence – if they cross that boundary, you'll be alerted to their location right away.

Our tester, Emily, said that compared to other trackers she tried, this one was very secure and stayed in place much better – even during active walks in the woods! It might look like quite a bulky design, but Emily reassures us that her dog wasn't bothered by it. She also praised the live tracking feature, which is great for directing you to your dog.

Like the other Tractive devices in this guide, this tracker has loads of cool features, like sleep and activity monitoring, which can be very useful for spotting changes in health and detecting any problems early.

You can keep an eye on their heart rate and respiratory rate, as well as how long they've slept and been active – painting a useful picture of their baseline health to refer back to if you have concerns. Emily says: "I found it really easy to set up; it's clear how you're meant to get it all started and how to program it to your dog."

WHAT'S NOT SO GOOD: The biggest downside to this pet tracker is that if you lose signal, it's not going to work so well – but this is pretty standard for most trackers that rely on a GPS signal. Unlike the PitPat model, the device can be used indoors, but it won't work if your dog goes underground – which is worth bearing in mind.

You'll need to pay a monthly subscription, which starts at $5 a month in the US or £4.50 a month in the UK (which is pretty average from my research).

WHAT'S GOOD: The Weenect XS is the smallest dog tracker in this guide, about the size of a standard AA battery and weighing roughly the same as a tablespoon of peanut butter. This compact size makes it perfect for small dog breeds – they'll probably forget it's even on their collar!

You can track your dog’s location via an app, with live updates every second so you’re never out of the loop. If you want to ensure your dog stays within a certain parameter (e.g., no further than your yard), you can set up a virtual fence and be alerted when they cross your set boundaries, which is great for peace of mind.

Not only can you keep an eye on your pet's whereabouts, but the device also offers activity monitoring, providing a report on their behavior – helpful for flagging any potential health concerns.

And if you want to brush up on your dog's recall, the tracker has a remote ring or vibrate feature, which you can train them to respond to. It also comes with a built-in flashlight so you can find them more easily in the dark, and it has a waterproof design that can withstand up to 1.5 meters of water for 60 minutes.

On top of all that, the battery life is super impressive – offering up to 10 days of power while in Wi-Fi zones or three days with continuous tracking. It's perfect for people like me who always forget to charge their devices!

WHAT'S NOT SO GOOD: While the initial cost isn't too expensive, you'll need to be prepared for monthly payments, as this tracker requires a subscription starting from $5.56/month (or £4.16/month). If that's a dealbreaker, choose the PitPat Tracker, which is completely free once you've bought the device.

How to choose the best GPS trackers for pets

The breed and species of your pet will be a big driver in choosing a particular tracker over another; larger breeds can easily accommodate larger trackers – and they're often the breeds you'll want to use them on anyway – whereas smaller dogs or cats might look a little silly with a large tracking module around their necks.

A good pet-safe collar is a must, so your pet will need to be used to wearing a collar at all times if you want constant tracking. There's not much that can be done about this. People sometimes think a pet tracker can be injected or embedded, in the same manner as a traditional microchip ID. That's just not the case; they need complex electronics and batteries.

Bear in mind that attaching these to a safe collar – one that will break should your pet's neck get snagged- means the possibility of losing the tracker. Luckily, GPS trackers do, by their nature, have tracking built in, so they're relatively easy to find again if they get dropped.

One final point: the pet tracker market is, shall we say, a little volatile. More than one tracker has come along and rather abruptly disappeared, meaning it's well worth considering the likely longevity of not only the tracking hardware but the software backing connected models up.

If the manufacturer pulls the plug, which is always a risk, that nifty collar accessory could turn into nothing more than a plastic pendant. Tractive is a strong choice for us because it's been around for a while, for example.

You’ll also need to keep up with the subscription fees on connected trackers; they’re typically not super-high, but tracking a household full of pets could make GPS trackers rather expensive to run.

GPS vs Bluetooth pet trackers

Broadly speaking, there are two main tracking technologies that the best pet trackers use; GPS and Bluetooth. But what is the difference between these two technologies, and which is the best choice for you?

GPS

GPS is the main type of pet tracker, and it stands for Global Positioning System. These trackers use a network of 30+ navigation satellites orbiting the Earth, which constantly send out signals. GPS trackers pick up these signals and use them to determine a location by comparing the time it takes each signal to approximate the device’s location, typically within three to five meters.

The advantage of a GPS device is that it doesn’t require an internet connection, instead it uses a mobile network connection for tracking. That’s also the main downside too though – since they require a mobile network, they almost always come with a monthly cost to pay for the network usage, much like a cell phone.

Bluetooth

The other main option you’ll find is Bluetooth trackers. These devices send out a secure Bluetooth signal that can be picked up by devices within range. This means they’re much more limited in range than GPS trackers, as they need to be within range of a compatible device to be picked up.

The upside is that they’re cheaper, don’t require subscription plans, and have much longer battery lives – some last several years. They’re also much more accurate, giving you your pet's exact location instead of the roughly 10-meter radius that you’ll get from GPS.

Which is better?

Both types of devices have their pros and cons. If you’re pretty sure your pet isn’t going to gallop off into the wilderness, then Bluetooth trackers are a great budget option, but GPS trackers are the more comprehensive option for ultimate peace of mind. You’ll need to weigh up the costs and risks to decide which option is best for you.

Is AirTag better than GPS tracker for pets?

No, Apple AirTags are not better than GPS trackers for pets – here’s why:

• Unreliable: Since AirTags rely on the Find My network, you can't track your pet if there are no nearby Apple devices.
• No live tracking: AirTags won’t show second-by-second updates of your pet’s location, unlike pet GPS trackers.
• No alerts: You won’t be notified if your pet escapes or ventures too far, as it doesn’t offer virtual fence features.

Is there a pet GPS tracker without a monthly fee?

Do vets recommend GPS trackers for pets?

Do vets recommend pet GPS trackers? I asked Dr Rebecca MacMillan to find out.

She says: "I definitely think GPS trackers are a good idea for pets, especially ones that tend to wander off! GPS trackers give a real-time location, meaning that pets can be more readily reunited with their owners.

"They are especially useful for easily distracted dogs with variable recall training. A good example is working dogs with a high prey drive who will chase off after a scent. A quality tracker will help you quickly find and retrieve your pet. Trackers are not a replacement for training, however, but they are a useful aid.

"GPS trackers can also give cat owners peace of mind as to their pet’s whereabouts. Some trackers even have a geofencing option, so that an alert can be sent when your cat strays too far from home. The main disadvantage is that cats are more liable to lose their tracker.

“Your cat must wear a safety or breakaway collar when out and about in case they get snagged on something like a branch. If their collar comes off, then so does the tracker. So, this is worth bearing in mind when deciding how much to spend. Trackers will also not protect your cat or dog against theft, as the tracker can easily be removed and discarded."

If you're looking for an outdoor camera or you live in a more remote area, the Reolink Go PT Ultra is your best choice in this guide, as it doesn't require a Wi-Fi connection to function. PetsRadar’s editor Georgia tested it out on the side of her pony's stable, and after months of testing, says she now "can't live without it."

Unlike most pet cameras on the market, you won't need to pay for a costly subscription to access all of the features – you'll just need a 4G network from a SIM card.

Best wireless pet camera

The Toucan Wireless Security Camera S4 has a 2K picture resolution, which Dan says is “very good” during the day and great for facial recognition. While the night vision doesn’t pick up details quite so well, it still lets you see if someone is approaching and sends an instant alert to your phone.

You can set a pre-recorded message to play when someone comes to your door, and Dan loves that you can customize the trigger zone to prevent unnecessary alerts. However, he wishes the zones were smaller so you could exclude areas more precisely.

The camera also features a two-way talk function, letting you speak to people or pets through your phone and hear their response too. After placing the camera outside in the rain, Dan noticed that the speaker sounded quiet, muffled, and distant. He experienced the same issue with the alarm noise – but Toucan swiftly sent him a replacement camera, which now works perfectly outdoors.

Dan praised the camera for feeling high-quality and well-made, noting that it was very simple to install. The wireless design makes it easy to position anywhere without the need for cables or professional help. The battery lasted him around a week, so if you’re planning a vacation, he recommends fully charging it beforehand.

Despite being one of the cheapest models in this guide, costing under $60, the Ring Indoor Camera packs in plenty of great features, like color night vision, motion detection, and a security siren.

With a 1080p HD resolution, it might not have the clearest camera compared to models like the Reolink Go PT Ultra Plus and Lorex 4K Spotlight Indoor/Outdoor, but our tester Matthew says it offers "great full-color picture quality" and captures footage instantly.

What sets this camera apart, though, is the manual privacy cover, which lets you swivel a panel over the lens and microphone to stop unwanted recording – without the hassle of unplugging the device from the wall.

Thanks to the motion detector, you'll receive notifications about any suspicious movements in your home and can customize the trigger zone to avoid unwanted alerts. It even features a siren to ward off intruders.

The camera is compatible with select Amazon devices, like the Echo Dot and Echo Show, which offer hands-free notifications and previews of the footage. There's also two-way audio, so you can hear and talk to people or pets.

If you want to record, review, and share the footage, you'll need to subscribe to the Ring Protect Plan, which starts at $4.99 a month. For something completely subscription-free with better picture quality, choose the Reolink Go PT Ultra Plus instead.

Blink Mini 2

If you’re on a budget, the Blink Mini 2 camera is well worth considering. Despite its lower-than-average price tag, it offers premium features like night vision, two-way talk, motion detection, and smart notifications – all without breaking the bank. We love that it’s weather-resistant, so you can place it indoors or outdoors (or move it around as needed), making it a highly versatile option.

Our tester Lindsey says: “This camera was super easy to set up, it took about five minutes or so. I found it easy to view the footage and look at it through your phone. The picture quality is pretty good and clear for a small screen."

While this camera offers lots of great features, it doesn't offer any pet-specific detection, treat tossing capabilities, or interactive elements like the Furbo 360° View Camera and Enabot ROLA PetPal.

Toucan Seek Pan & Tilt Camera

The Toucan Seek Pan & Tilt Camera offers AI-powered human detection and pre-recorded broadcasts, along with two-way communication and the ability to remotely pan and tilt the camera.

Our tester Chloe says: “The picture quality is good enough for the intended use – it’s not amazing, but I don’t know if it needs to be. Being able to adjust the camera position remotely from the app is very useful.”

How we tested the best pet cameras

To find the best pet camera, I asked colleagues, friends, and family members for their top recommendations, then researched everything about these products – from resolution to field of view.

After narrowing the list to just nine products, I handed each device over to the PetsRadar testing team, who followed a standardized set of criteria:

How to choose the best pet camera

As with most pet products, your choice of camera will depend heavily on your particular pet and their specific pattern of behavior. Before you choose anything, determine what you're OK to leave in the house alone with your pets.

For larger dogs, a camera that dispenses treats might seem like an invitation to gnaw on that thing until the rest of the treats are revealed, which isn't the best when the treats are contained within an expensive camera powered by electricity. Even smaller dogs might get rather interested, so ensure you can place that camera somewhere they won't be able to reach it.

For lazier cats, a box with a laser built in might not rouse their attention even slightly; but for attentive, easily bored pets, a laser-equipped camera gives you a great opportunity to engage with your furry friends even when you're not there.

If you tend to go out in the evenings, or often hear rumblings around the house while you're in bed, then night vision will be a useful feature, particularly if you have cats aligned to their natural nocturnal sleep cycle, or you're worried about your dog's cage training. Pick something with recording facilities, too, so you can go back and watch for any signs of bad behavior.

Do pet cameras record all of the time?

Most pet cameras do not record all the time, only being triggered by sound or movement. This is good for spotting patterns of behavior, and for saving on storage space if the recorded clips are being saved anywhere, such as with a cloud service.

There are some that will continually record, usually by rewriting over older footage within a certain timeframe – such as a week. For most people, the “triggered” versions are more than enough, but if you have a particular desire to have lengthy footage of your pet, it might be worth looking for one that has a continuous record function.

Do pet cameras help with separation anxiety?

Treating separation anxiety can be tricky, with multiple approaches often considered the best. If you’ve got a pet that suffers from this affliction, having a pet camera with a two-way microphone can be a good way to soothe the animal from afar, giving them the ability to hear your voice.

You can also issue specific commands, such as “sit” or “stay” from afar, which can be a good substitute for being in the room with them. That’s not to say that it’s a guaranteed cure (very little is), but a pet cam can be a good part of an overall plan to combat the problem.

Dr. MacMillan says: "Pet cameras allow owners to monitor their pet’s behavior from a distance. The camera can help owners to spot signs of separation anxiety like pacing, vocalizing, and excessive panting.

"While they can’t directly solve the problem, they do allow pet parents to check on their cat or dog at regular intervals. If issues are seen, then owners can take positive steps to try and address this. Cameras are therefore also a useful aid to see if you are making progress with your behavioral training. Cameras may also be helpful if you have a pet with medical issues such as epilepsy or cardiac disease, giving owners peace of mind."

She says: "I definitely recommend pet cameras. They are a handy tool to check that all is well with your pet while you are out of the house. Ideally, you would see a relaxed or sleeping pet when you are checking in.

If you are seeing a distressed or destructive animal, then you will need to take steps to resolve this. Always speak to your vet or a qualified pet behaviorist if you are unsure how to tackle things yourself."

The Closer Pets Large White Two-level Pet Fountain holds up to 202 oz of water, making it a brilliant choice if you have a big dog breed who needs plenty of hydration.

While this device certainly does that job, I found the instructions very complicated and it took me quite a while to get it set up – I eventually had to find a video on YouTube to help.

As well as being tricky to install, the motor is much louder than the other models in this guide, which is a deal-breaker for me – though it might not be for you if it’s kept in another room. Due to its size and corded operation, the design looks clunky and unattractive, and I don't have much confidence that it would stay in place if pushed by a heavy dog.

Compared to other pet fountains I've tested, I wouldn’t recommend it as my first choice, but if you have a particularly large dog and don't mind the design, it could still work well.

How we tested the best pet water fountains

To find the best pet fountains, I researched major websites and independent retailers, narrowing it down to just six options. After reading customer reviews and assessing the materials, I tested most of these models myself –⁠ just handing the Enabot Smart Fountain to our writer Adam to try. I know that pet fountains can be expensive, so I followed a strict criteria:

• Set-up: No one has time (or wants) to spend hours setting up a pet fountain, so I've included details on how easy these models were to install.
• Noise level: As someone with sensitive hearing, nothing would bother me more than a noisy pet fountain humming in the background of my day. You can be reassured that all five of these models are pretty much silent – except for the gentle splashing of water.
• Quality: Pets are renowned for pushing over their water bowls, so I ensured that the fountains are well-made and built to last.
• Size: I included a range of sizes to suit every home and pet.

How to choose the best pet water fountain

With so many pet water fountains on the market, it’s difficult to choose the perfect one for you. But there are certain key features which you need to look out for. These will not only ensure that you’re buying a pet water fountain that will encourage your cats and dogs to drink but go a long way to making your life easier too.

1. Easy to clean
Over time, a pet water fountain – just like a bowl – is going to get a little grubby. Pet saliva, dander, and fur will begin to clog the filter and you may find you get some build-up over time. So look for a pet water fountain that is easy to dismantle and clean.

2. Good stability
One of the issues with standard bowls is that there is a danger they could tip, sending water across your floor. When you’re using a pet water fountain, you’re dealing with even more water so you’ll want to keep spillage to a minimum. Opt for a stable fountain. If it’s a light model, then see if it has grip patches on the base. Suction cups are fine on a heavier fountain.

3. Time-saving features
Yes, a pet water fountain’s main purpose is to ensure your dog or cat is getting sufficient amounts of water, fresh and clean on demand but consider the practicalities too. A large capacity fountain means you have to refill it less frequently. Dishwater-proof pieces make cleaning easy. You could also look for a pet water fountain with an alarm or light to indicate when water levels need topping up or a filter needs to be replaced.

Dr. Godfrey adds: "It’s a good idea to choose a water fountain that is pet-safe, to make sure that your pet won’t get injured while using it – the batteries or any wires should be securely covered.

"It’s also worth considering what size of water fountain your pet will need. Some water fountains are tall enough that they allow your pet to drink with their head still raised, without having to lean down as they would to drink from a bowl. This can be useful for dogs with issues with reflux or a condition called megaesophagus."

Do dogs and cats like pet water fountains?

Still, water has the potential to become stagnant and this can cause bacteria to form, leading to potential illness. It’s perhaps why animals have long preferred free-flowing rivers and streams.

“Most dogs and cats prefer fountains to bowls,” says Dr. Beth Turner, DVM, of Preventive Vet. “Besides the fact they often like running, cool water, most fountains are wide and therefore don't rub on whiskers.”

Do vets recommend pet water fountains?

Absolutely! According to Dr. Georgina Ushi, DVM, pet fountains provide “a continuous flow of fresh, filtered water.” They also remove impurities like dirt, litter, hair, food, and water, improving taste and health outcomes.

Additionally, research published in Small Animal Practice suggests pet water fountains are especially useful for promoting hydration in aging cats. And they’ve been cited as effective in combating feline cystitis (urinary bladder inflammation).

Vet Dr. Hannah Godfrey adds, "I recommend water fountains to lots of my clients, particularly people with cats. This is because water fountains make water more appealing and attract your pet’s attention, encouraging them to drink more.

"This is particularly useful for cats with urinary tract problems or constipation, where improving their hydration can help to relieve their symptoms and reduce flare-ups."

How do you clean a pet water fountain?

So, you’ve read that people find some pet water fountains easier to clean than others but you’re unsure exactly what that entails?

“Water fountains can easily be taken apart and cleaned with warm water and soap,” says D. Beth Turner, DVM, of Preventive Vet. “Some fountains have parts that are dishwasher-safe on the top rack. To help keep it clean, filters must be changed regularly.”

Should you turn off a pet water fountain at night?

Given the environmental impact of running electrical goods (not to mention the cost), it’s natural to be concerned about having a pet water fountain running day and night. But remember this: just because you’re asleep at

night doesn’t mean your fur friend is. Does that mean you keep it on, though?

“Pet fountains can be left running continuously as long as they are properly maintained (water level is monitored, the unit is cleaned, and filters are regularly changed),” says Dr Beth Turner, DVM, of Preventive Vet. “There is no need to turn them off except to clean them. Note, if the water gets below a certain level or runs out, it will damage the motor.”

If you’re looking for a more budget friendly pet monitoring system, then the Blink Outdoor 4 is tough to beat on value. You can get a single camera setup for under $100. For that bargain price, you get a 1080p camera with 143° field of view, infrared night vision, and two-way audio so you can talk to your pet (or anyone else hanging out in your garden).

It’s capable of motion detection, sending alerts to your smartphone app when it detects anything in the zones you’re monitoring. It can also specifically do person detection, but this feature is locked behind a $3 monthly subscription. That subscription also gets you access to cloud storage, but there is local storage available too via the included Sync Module.

The Blink Outdoor 4 also has a staggering two-year battery life (and there is a battery extension pack that boosts that to four years). Blink cameras are also compatible with Alexa, which makes sense given that Blink is owned by Amazon. This also helps to explain the amazing value of the Blink Outdoor 4 — it’s by far the cheapest option out there, but it still has a great feature set.

3. Best hidden outdoor camera wireless for pets

If you're not concerned about the connectivity and smart features of commercial security cameras, here's an alternative option. The Victure Wildlife Trap Camera is a trail camera meant for tracking wild animals. There's no reason you can't employ the same tech in your garden to capture footage of your own pets or scope out visiting wildlife, and given its low price, this may well tick a few boxes that the others on this list do not.

You won't be able to bring up a live view on your smartphone or receive motion alerts as there's basically no smart functionality. Instead, you'll need to pull the Trap Camera open to view your footage or remove its SD card, where you'll find either high-resolution photographs of your garden goings-on, 1080p video footage or time-lapse video giving you a long-term overview of today's outdoor action.

There is motion detection, although it's on the more simplistic end, so may be easily triggered if you point this towards an area where there's likely to be unwanted movement. You can adjust the sensitivity, at least, though it may take a while to find the sweet spot.

There's also infrared night vision, with an array of 38 LEDs giving a bright view of what's happening, and waterproofing that is claimed to withstand the humid damp of a rainforest.

4. Best wired outdoor wireless camera for pets

Ezviz's wired security camera is a tough old cookie. It's heavy, solidly built, and obviously made to withstand the weather. It also claims to feature colour night vision, although it's more 'spotlight night vision' in which the camera shines its impressively bright pair of LEDs onto the scene.

Those hoping for a full-color look at midnight garden invaders may be better served by the likes of the Arlo Pro 3. Credit where it's due, though: the monochrome infra-red night vision is superb, and manages a crisp 1080p picture day or night.

Being a wired camera, you have to be more careful with positioning. Waterproof adapters for its cables are included, and you'll need to supply a right-sized PVC pipe to run those cables along. The benefit, of course, is that this doesn't rely on potentially shaky wireless connectivity (though you can choose to run it on Wi-fi if you wish) and it doesn't require batteries. Once installed, it should work with no maintenance required.

The Ezviz C3N is a little rough and ready, and the app reflects that, but it’s still a better experience than you might expect at this price. It's not quite our favorite budget camera, as the Blink XT2's presentation and convenience are better, but if you want to hike up the ladder once and once only, the C3N could be the option that suits you best.

If you really want to push the boat out on a pet camera, the Arlo Ultra 2 is the way to go. It has all the key features of the Arlo Pro 5S– the weatherproofing, colour night vision, integrated spotlight – and a similar compact design. While the Pro 5S will do just fine for most tasks, such as security or dog-watching, the Ultra 2 brings a few upgrades to the table.

The 2K sensor of the Pro 5S has been increased to 4K here, meaning that it captures almost four times as many pixels. It also claims a 180-degree field-of-view and covers a wider area than its cheaper sibling.

The Ultra 2 has twin motion sensors on each camera unit for greater precision and a wider range of animal detection. Its extra resolution can be used to automatically zoom in on a target and track it through the frame – great if you're looking to watch back footage of far-off antics. This feature is also included on the Arlo Pro 5S, but it really shines with the resolution of the Ultra 2. Two-way talk gets an upgrade, with a twin microphone array able to cancel out wind noise.

The only issue with the Arlo Ultra 2 is its price. This is more the sort of installation you'd find in a professional environment than something used to spy on a cat. But if you have the money to spend, it's the best home and pet security product around.

It's worth noting, this is the second iteration of the Ultra, and it has most of the same specs as the original Ultra, but there have been some key upgrades. Wi-Fi connectivity range has been extended, alongside the addition of dual-band Wi-Fi support. You also now get a free trial of the premium subscription included too.

Not only that, it's possible to pick up sound and to use the camera to have a two-way conversion with anyone who happens to be outside. You could, if you so wish, even call out your pet's name and see if they respond. It's a lovely way to engage.

The Nest Cam is also weatherproof, adhering to the IP54 standard, and it's really easy to install. Once you've set up the account and synced the device to your Wi-Fi, you simply attach the base to the wall. Since, the base is magnetic, it's then a case of just moving the camera close and it'll stick. This also means that you can easily pull the camera away from the base when you need to recharge it. You can also move the camera around a bit so that you get it at an optimal angle.

But how long will the battery last? According to Google, recording 20 to 25 events per day will see the battery run down within six weeks. Yet, if it records just two to four events per day, you'll get seven months out of it. Much depends on the ambient temperature too, though. Zooming in and out using the 6x digital zoom may have an effect and talking too much will mean more frequent charging.

Opt for a subscription and you'll get a little more out of the camera. As it stands, you will be able to store three hours of rolling video for free and detect animals, people and vehicles but pay each month for four week's worth of storage and face detection. All-in-all, it's a good offering, especially if you're already part of the Google ecosystem. If there's a downside, it's that you can't remove and replace the battery so you'll be without coverage for a short while while it charges.

How to choose the best outdoor pet cams

If you're installing a wireless outdoor camera, you'll need to consider battery life first and foremost. The actual battery life may vary from the manufacturer's stated claims depending on how often the camera is activated; it's safe to presume, in most cases, the life will be a little lower than suggested.

Every time a wireless camera runs out of juice you'll either have to bring it inside to charge it, putting that camera out of action for some time, or switch out a fresh battery. If you've mounted the camera somewhere high up, that means getting the ladder out – so a longer lifespan is, clearly, preferable.

Motion detection is particularly important if you're aiming to use a camera to watch your pets. You'll need to mount your camera, wired or not, somewhere it won’t pick up too many false positives. Even if your camera is smart enough to tell the difference between people, animals, and cars, ensure you angle it in such a way as to avoid busy roads or frequent public thoroughfares.

Finally, of course, there are the specs: a higher resolution sensor gets you higher quality footage and the various storage options allow you to access that footage in different ways. Night vision is probably essential, but if you spend a little more you'll likely end up with a sensor which can handle low light (and glare) with much more aplomb, raising the threshold for having to switch to a night vision mode and letting you see further into your garden when things are dark outside.

Where should I place my pet camera?

Placing your outdoor wireless pet camera is a bit of a balancing act. You want to place it in an optimum spot where it can see the largest possible area of your garden, backyard, or whatever space you're monitoring your pets in. If your pets favor a particular area, such as under their favorite tree, then you may want to give up a bit of that coverage area in favor of pointing it at their regular play and rest areas.

The flipside of that is that most wireless cameras require a wireless connection, which means they need to be placed somewhere that has a solid Wi-Fi connection. If your camera needs a constant connection, you’re probably going to be best off placing it on the outside wall of your house, where it’s as close as possible to your router.

If your garden is particularly large, or is shaped in such a way that there will be blind spots from a house-based mounting position, you’ll need to consider a multi-camera set-up. In this case, you can look at getting a Wi-Fi range booster, a second router, or even a wired camera connection to ensure a strong signal.

Do you need WiFi for an outdoor pet camera?

While most households have a WiFi connection these days, not everyone has wireless internet access. This can limit your options when it comes to smart home tech like outdoor pet cameras. It’s also entirely possible that you have WiFi, but that it doesn’t extend out far enough to reach the spot you want to place the camera. Fortunately, there are plenty of options out there that don't need a constant internet connection.

Some outdoor wireless cameras which focus on real-time monitoring, such as the Ring Spotlight Cam Battery, require an active internet connection to function at all. If you can’t get a WiFi connection in your garden then avoid models like this and look for cameras that have local storage.

Most of the cameras in our list have a local storage option — some have built-in hard drives, while others have slots for SD cards. Be aware that you’ll need to periodically clear footage if these storage devices become full, or they won’t be able to record any more.

Pawfit 2: Features

There’s nothing new about the idea of GPS trackers, but this has built on the successes of those that have gone before and made it more suitable for pets. The Pawfit 2 click-fits into a collar mount, allowing it to be easily removed for charging using the easy-to-use custom charging dock. It’s also waterproof up to a depth of three meters, so you won’t need to worry when you are going for riverside walks and your pet fancies a bit of a splash around.

A lot of consideration has been paid to safety: you'll get alerts when the tracker is removed from (or has fallen off of) the collar mount, as well as geofencing facilities in the app which can tell you if your dog strays beyond a certain boundary. It'll also play an audio alert if someone finds your dog, with all the information they need to get your pet returned to you, and you can trigger an audio tone if your dog starts heading for the hills, something which may be enough to distract them from whatever quarry they're chasing.

Points to hardware design, too: while this is marginally more cumbersome than Tractive's tracker (particularly noticeable if you're using it to track a larger cat, something Pawfit suggests) it's light enough.

If you're in an area with cellular reception you'll get live updates through the app, which also gives you access to a host of activity monitoring metrics and all the information you need to make sense of them. It's worth noting, though, that the Pawfit 2 does require a subscription to get running. Connecting to mobile networks isn't free. Thankfully it's not too expensive, and there's a discount if you pay for a whole year at a time, compared to pay-monthly costs.

Pawfit 2: User reviews

Users of the Pawfit 2 seem, on the whole, overwhelmingly positive about it, and we can see why. The location tracking, in particular, appears to work very well, with some users applauding its ability to switch to a battery-sapping extra detail mode for ten minutes if your dog heads for the trees, and most people being very forgiving of the fact that it basically doesn't work to track your pet at all if you're in the countryside with no signal. You'll get the data later on, but it's only really suitable for finding an errant dog when the tracker can communicate with a mast.

Others have found the geofencing functionality gave them a lot of peace of mind, particularly with skittish dogs and rescues – it gives you an automatic alert should your pet stray from a particular area, which is perfect if you're leaving them in the garden unattended. The alarm function, too, is something of an unexpected highlight, startling dogs out of potentially unpleasant or undesirable activities; one user commented "It works a treat, and it's not too loud as its right next to his ear – our dog has an uncanny interest in consuming other animals' poo!"

Pawfit states 2-5 days battery life, and that really does seem to depend on the amount of use the Pawfit 2 gets on a walk. Some users manage two and a half days, some longer if they're only using it for walks and leaving it switched off around the house, but some with more energetic dogs don't quite reach those levels. We'd guess that a lack of signal might lower its longevity further; searching for a signal can be more demanding than maintaining one.

A few users have had issues with the twist-click mount, losing the device after it was dislodged in the wilds, and a very small number have had tracking issues – as it uses GPS, this shouldn't be a huge issue, but its ability to reach satellites could be affected if you're walking in a built up area.

Should you buy the Pawfit 2?

There's little doubt that the Pawfit 2 enhances the safety and fitness of every dog and, indeed, many larger cats. It's compact and light enough so as not to be too obtrusive, and it's packed with neat features which make it useful both for you and for anyone that might find your dog too.

A vast number of owners have found themselves very attached to using the Pawfit 2, and don't want to go back – that's something of a ringing endorsement. There are cheaper activity trackers (like the PitPat) which don't track their location and which may be better if you're only on a fitness kick – but this is certainly a top option if you're looking for location tracking too.

It's difficult to prioritize one of the Owl's features over another, but let's start with that which makes it unique: those wheels. They give the Skymee Owl enough purchase to roll on hard floors, carpet, or grass, with the entire central portion of the unit counterweighted so it stays facing forward as the Owl travels. You can pilot it yourself, directing it to go forward, back, or turn using your phone, all while viewing what the Owl sees while you do it.

As well as being remote-controlled, you can also set it to roam automatically. It can detect and avoid objects in its path (but it’s not so great at dealing with steps, so will be better suited to rooms on one level). You can also set a path for it to follow if you don’t want it leading your pet into areas you don’t want it to. This makes it a fun interactive pet companion while you are out of your house, provided you’ve remembered to charge it before you leave, of course.

If your furry friends really bond with it, the Owl can switch to a mode where it generates its own Wi-fi network, which means you can pack it in a bag for some outdoor play and let it dish out the best dog treats or cat treats along the way!

The camera looks to be a fairly standard 1080p sensor, so not too exciting in terms of its resolution, but it offers a fairly unique viewpoint likely lower than your pet's eye line. You can obviously use it to see where you're driving the Owl, but it's also possible to record footage through it, or just peep at what your pets are up to when you're not at home - if they're not happy, the Owl includes both a microphone and speaker, so you can calm them down with your voice. 

Many of these features can be found in other pet cameras, and indeed in cheaper cameras that don't have a specific pet focus but we don't know of anything with quite the same companionship and play features of the Skymee Owl. If separation anxiety is a big issue, we'd recommend pairing the Skymee Owl alongside something like the RelaxoPet Pro, which uses advanced vibration technology to calm stressed pets.

Everything's fine in theory, but how does the Owl hold up in practice? 

In many ways it's great. Most people seem perfectly happy with the standard of the Skymee Owl's camera, for example, and the test shots we've seen back that up: it's a high quality eye with good range and adept night vision capabilities. You won't have any trouble seeing what your little one is up to.

The wheels don't quite hold up to the promise, though. They struggle, it seems, to gain traction over certain carpets, so this is probably better suited to hard floors than it is to a '70s shag-pile lounge, and we'd likely recommend against the outdoor functionality unless you're playing on an immaculately tended bowling green.

Some users have noted that the Owl is a little larger than it seems in pictures, so it might be a little intimidating if you're buying it for a cat rather than a larger dog, treat dispensing or not. Depends on your cat, really; others have found theirs interacted with it fine, and some found their cat was utterly indifferent to it, which should honestly be the expected outcome when making any expensive purchase for a cat.

Even the most positive user reviews - and there are a lot - mention that the Owl is prone to occasional disconnections, and that Skymee's app is functional but not particularly special. That's not something that's too onerous if you're sat at home and piloting the thing manually, but it may mean the Owl Robot loses a few points as a remote camera if it doesn't get on too well with your wireless network.

Should you buy the Skymee Owl Robot?

If you're a dog owner and your hound isn't on the more destructive side of the spectrum, we could see the Skymee Owl adding a bit of much-needed companionship and interest to those days you can't be with them. Cats, too, might find it interesting - and even if they don't, you'll be able to roll it around and (low viewing angle willing) see precisely where they're sleeping today. 

But it's an expensive thing that tries to do three things at once. If you're looking for a pet toy, there are numerous other options. A pet camera needs to be 100% reliable to stop you worrying for no reason; if this is, as some have suggested, a little flaky in that department, it might be best reserved for play. 

We'd put this firmly in the 'disposable income' bracket. You don't need the Skymee Owl, but you and your pet will probably enjoy it.

You don't need to activate the RelaxoPet Pro manually; you can set it to an automatic mode, which uses twin microphones to detect signs of stress and start the sounds for a set period. That's great for helping with separation anxiety – though you shouldn't expect it to work right away. While its output is obviously calming, it is important to associate those relaxing sounds with positive attention; Pavlov would be proud.

There will always be a certain level of natural skepticism that comes with a product such as this, but also a definite trend towards confirmation bias. So it's no surprise that the RelaxoPet's reviews jump to either end of the spectrum, with some claiming it solved their pet's anxiety problems, and others claiming it didn't work at all.

The most positive responses (and there are more of these than negative) came from those that took the time to train their dogs to the sound, with many saying that their canine companions can now sleep through anything. So you're going to either be listening to the same new-age music loops for hours on end or a barely-audible swirl, either of which may be a little hard on the brain.

We wouldn't pick the RelaxoPet Pro as the first port of call for a dog with anxiety issues. There are other, more established, solutions that rely on a little more science, including a thundervest or diffusers such as Adaptil, but they don't necessarily have the same flexibility or spiritual energy. 

You may well prefer the concept and execution of the RelaxoPet Pro and, given that there's more than just a dog version, it's important to remember that there's no way to put a thundervest on a bird.

What’s the difference between GPS and microchip?

A GPS (Global Positioning System) dog tracker is something a canine wears, which allows their owners to access the dog’s location in real-time, helping to locate them quickly and easily should they go missing.

Since this tiny device is inserted under the animal’s skin as opposed to being attached to something removable, it’s not an easy thing for the dog to lose.

So, until the day that GPS technology can fit inside a tiny microchip, why not opt for both tracking methods to ensure that your dog is fully protected to the best of their abilities at all times.

It’s worth pointing out that there’s no remote access to your video history with the Arlo Pro 3 Camera, which means you need to physically connect it to a computer if you’re wanting to skip back.

Overall, while not perfect, we feel the Arlo Pro 3 Camera is worth the money if you want peace of mind that your pet is safe when you’re apart. You’ll be able to check-in whenever you want, keep an eye on your furkid day or night, and the cherry on top is that this little beauty won’t just protect your pet, it’ll protect your home too.
