Stormberg dog treats recalled over salmonella fear

A dog treats recall is always concerning but if you have purchased one of three products made by Stormberg Foods, it's important you don't serve them to your pooch.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the affected dog treats have potentially been contaminated with salmonella.

A sample tested positive for harmful bacteria, leading to the pulling of Beg & Barker Chicken Breast Strips Dog Treat, Billo’s Best Friend Chicken Breast Strips Dog Treat, and Green Coast Pets Chicken Crisps Dog Treat products.

Although no related illnesses have been reported, the recall is being taken as a precaution. The products were sold online and in retail stores between June 8 and June 22.

Stormberg Foods was notified of the problem by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services (NCDA & CS) on July 6 and both the company and the agency are investigating the cause.

If your pet has consumed any of the batches listed in the table at the end of this article, you should look out for these symptoms: 

• Lethargy
• Diarrhea 
• Fever 
• Vomiting 
• Decreased appetite 
• Abdominal pain 

Some pets may be infected with the bacteria and not show any symptoms at all, but they can still pass it on to other animals and humans.

The human symptoms of salmonella include:

• Nausea 
• Vomiting 
• Diarrhea 
• Abdominal cramping 
• Fever 

If you have purchased an affected product, you should contact the company at stormbergship@gmail.com to arrange a return or disposal. You should also email the company and contact your veterinarian if your pet has become ill after eating one of the affected products.
